정치, 사회 - 120

사회라는 것은 전에는 독립하여 혼자의 힘으로 살아오다가 공동생활에서 얻을 수 있는 도움과 보호 때문에 그들의 자유의 일부분을 포기한 사람들의 자유선택에 의해 형성되었다고 흔히들 생각되어 왔으나, 현재 우리는 옛날부터 인간은 서로  사회적인 관계를 맺고 살아왔다는 것을 알고 있다.

 

<표현 연구>

• 독립하여 혼자의 힘으로 살다 - be independent, living for oneself; lead an independent life; be independent, supporting oneself.
• 공동생활 - community(communal) life; communal living 따위 표현도 있지만 결국 [남과 함께 사는 것]이라는 원시적인 상태를 말하므로 living with others 가 적역.
• ~에서 얻을 수 있는 도움과 보호 - the aid and protection that can be obtained from(come from) ~.
• ~ 때문에 - ([~을 위하여]의 뜻이므로) for the sake of ~; with a view(an eye) to ~ ing; in order to obtain ~.
• 그들의 자유의 일부를 포기하다 - give up a part of their liberty; forsake a part of their personal liberty.

<구문 연구>

1. 첫 문장은 [사회라는 것은 ... 흔히들 생각되어 왔다]까지를 한 sentence로 끊어서 처리해 본다.서두를 It has been sometimes thought that ~ 로 시작하여 (a) [사회는 ... 사람들의 자유선택에 의해 형성되었다]처럼 옮기면 Society was founded by the free choice of men who had been ... , but who gave up ... for the sake of .... that come from living with others. (b) [옛날 사람들은 원래 스스로의 의사로 ... 을 버리고 사회를 형성하였다]처럼 원문을 바꾸어 옮겨보면, men of old times had been independent ... , but gave up ... of their own accord and formed society with a view to obtaining .... [전에는 독립하여 ... 살아오다가] 부분의 시제는 past perfect tense로 한다.
2. 둘째 번 sentence는 We now konw that 로 시작하여 that-clause의 주격은 men 으로 한다. 시제는 present perfect tense이다.

(1) It has been sometimes thought that society was formed by the free choice of men who had before been independent, living each for himself, but who gave up a part of their liberty for the sake of the protection and aid that come from living with others. We now know that from the earliest times men have lived in social relations with one another.

(2) It has been commonly believed that ancient men were independent, each meeting all of his own needs but who gave up a part of their personal liberty on their own accord and formed society with a view to obtaining the aid and protection that come from communal living. We now know, however, that men have lived as members of society since the earliest times.
