법률은 그 수가 상당히 많아서 아마 그것을 모두 다 알고 있는 사람은 거의 없을 것이다. 그렇다면 자기도 모르고 법을 위반하는 경우도 있을 수 있겠다. 그런 경우에 법률을 몰랐다고 해서 죄를 받지 않고 넘어갈 수 있느냐 하면 그렇지가 않다.

 

<표현 연구>

• 법률은 그 수가 상당히 많다 - there are so many laws; (we를 주격으로 하면) we have considerable numerous laws.
• ~ 사람은 거의 없다 - there are few who ~; on one knwos (all of ~).
• 그렇다면 - ([따라서]) therefore; ([그 결과]) consequently.
• 자기도 모르고 - without knowing it; unconsciously; without intention; through one's ignorance (of the law); unaware.

• 죄을 받지 않고 넘어가다 - be left unpunished; be expected from being punished; be excused (from getting punished); ([법에 대한 무지]를 주격으로 하여) excuse one from getting punished; (violate a law) with impunity.
• 그렇지가 않다 - it doesn't follow that ~.

 

<구문 연구>

1. 첫째 문장은 (a) There are such a great number of laws that probably no one knows all of them. (b) Since we have .... there are few who ... (c) Since there are so many laws, .... 따위 여러가지로 옮겨본다.
2. 두 번째 sentence는 전자의 연결관계에 맞추어 and so; therefore; thus; then; consequently 중에서 한 가지를 골라 쓴다. (a) Therefore one may .... (b) Consequently, it may happen that .... (c) There it is possible that ...
3. 마지막 문장은 in such a case ; in that case 로 이어서 그 다음은 (a) [법을 몰랐기 때문에 벌을 받지 않고 넘어가기를 원할지도 모른다. 그러나 그런 예외는 허용되지 않는다]처럼 분해하여 In that case one may wish to be left unpunished because of ... But such an exception can never be made. (In such a case it doesn't follow, however, that one can be excepted from being punished because ...) (b) In such a case he cannot be excused because ... (1) Since there are so many laws, probably no one person knows all of them. Consequently, it may happen that a man violate a law without knowing it. In such a case, however, his ignorance of the law does not excuse him from getting punished.

(2) There are such a great number of laws that there are few who know them all. In that case one may wish to be left unpunished because of one's ignorance of the law, but such an exception should never be made. (In such a case it doesn't follow, however, that one can be excepted from being punished because one didn't know the law. In such a case one cannot be excused because he knows nothing of the law).
