정치, 사회 - 114

이런 말을 한다고 해서 저금이나 보험이 무의미하다는 뜻은 아니다. 사람은 누구나 한창 때가 있는 법인데 그 시기에 노후를 위해 저축을 해두지 않으면 현재와 같은 사회구조하에서는 틀림없이 어려움을 겪게 마련이다. 저금이나 보험이 무의미하게 된다면 그것은 정말 큰 일이다.

 

<표현 연구>

• 이런 말을 한다고 해서 ... 하다는 뜻이 아니다 - by saying this, I do not mean that ...; I hope you will not misunderstand what I just said by thinking that ... ; I hope you will not misunderstand my story by thinking that ....
• 저금이나 보험 - ([저금을 하는 것이나 보험에 드는 것]의 뜻으로 생각하여) saving money or insuring oneself. [저금을 하다] save money; save. [보험에 들다]  be insured; insure oneself, insure one's life.
• 무의미하다 - meaningless; uselss, of no use; of no avail.
• 한창 때가 있는 법니다 - [가장 활동적인 시기가 있다]의 뜻이므로 Everybody has a summer in his life. 가 적역이다. have one's day(hey day) 와 같은 표현도 있지만 이것은 [그 사람의 절정기]의 뜻이어서 [한창 일할 때]의 의미라고만은 볼 수 없다.
• 노후를 위해 저축하다 - (summer of life 와 대조적으로) save (provide) for one's declining winter (years); provide for old age.
• ~해두지 않으면 - if .... not ; unless ; in case one's fails to ~.
• 현재와 같은 사회구조하에서는 - in oure society working under such a plan as this; in society working a hard time; be sure to suffer. [어려움을 겪고 있다]는 be hard up; be straitened; be in a difficulty; have a hard(trying) time.
• 무의미하게 된다면 - if all saving and insurances were to be (should be) brought (reduced) to naught (come to nothing) (should는 were to 보다 의문의 정도가 약함); ... become valueless.
• 그것은 정말 큰 일이다 - it would be terrible indeed; all would be up(over); that would be a serious matter.

 

<구문 연구>

1. 첫 문장 [이런 말을 ... 뜻은 아니다]는 표현어구에서 본 것처럼 (a) By saying this I never mean that ... (b) I hope you will not misunderstand(misinterpret) my story by thinking that ... 따위로 표현하든가, (c) Not that saving money or insuring oneself may be of no use at all 처럼 not ~ that ~(... 라고 해서 ~ 라는 것은 아니다)의 구문을 쓰는 방법도 있다.
2. 두 번째 문장은 [... 위해 저축을 해두어야 한다]까지를 끊어서 한 sentence로 정리하고 별도 문장으로 [그 시기에 ... 해두지 않으면 ~ 겪게 마련이다]로 처리한다. (a) Everybody has ... ,during which period he should provide for old age. (b) Everyone has ... , and he should provide for .. during the period. 한편 후반부는 (a) One who has failed to do this is sure to suffer when ... you know society is working today([현재와 같은 사회조직하에서는] 부분을 완전히 분해하여 이런 식으로 표현해 볼 수도 있다). (b) In case he fails to do this, he will certainly get into difficulty under the social system ... 처럼 된다.
3. 마지막 문장은 (a) 정상적인 가정법을 이용하여 If all saving and insurance were to ... , that would be .... 로 하거나 (b) 부정사를 이용하여 (b) It would be terrible just to imagine the possibility that all saving and insurance ... 처럼 옮겨볼 수도 있다.

 

<참고 예문>

• 나는 천만 원짜리 보험에 들어 있다. - I am insured for ten-millions won.
• 당신은 그녀의 입을 다물게 해둘 수 있ㄷ. 그렇다고 해서 그녀가 뭐 중요한 것을 알고 있다는 것은 아니다 - You can help to keep her mouth shut. Not that she knows anything that matters.
• 그는 55세가 되어 퇴직할 때에 대비하여 상당한 금액을 저축하고 있다 - He has saved a tidy sum of money to provide for the day when he will turn 55 and retire.

(1) By saying this I don't mean that saving money or insuring oneself is useless. Everybody has a summer in his life during which he should porvide for his old age. One who has failed to do this is sure to suffer when he gets old considering how society is today.Needless to say it is terrible just to imagine the possibility that all saving and insurance might be reduced to naught eventually.

(2) I hope you will not musunderstand what I have just said by thinking that saving money or insuring oneself may be utterly meaningless. Everyone has a summer in his life, and he should provide for his declining years during the period. If he fails to do this, he will certainly get into(face) difficulty considering social system we have today. If all savings and insurance were to become valueless, that would be really a seious matter.
