해방직후에는 이 나라를 민주화하겠다는 열정이 대단했는데 요즘 세상을 보면 그러한 열정이 어디에 갔는가 싶어 한심스럽다. 어쨌든 우리는 올바른 민주주의를 이 나라에 확립하려는 노력을 늦추어서는 안 된다.

 

<표현 연구>

• 해방직후에는 - just after the 1945 Liberation (of Korea); in the immeditate post Liberation years in Korea.
• 이 나라를 민주화하겠다는 열정 - that popular enthusiasm for democratization; that fiery zeal for democracy. 이 두 부분을 한데 묶어 [해방 직후의 민주화에 대한 열정]으로 정리하여 보면 that popular enthusiasm for domocratization which marked the immediate post-Liberation years in Korea; that fiery zeal for democracy which was characteristic of the immediate post-Liberation days in Korea처럼 옮길 수 있다.
• ~에 대한 열정이 대단하다 - ([사람들]을 주격으로 하면) people are eager for ~ ; people are keen to ~.
• 요즘 세상을 보면 - ([요즘 세상을 보면 ... 한심스럽다]로 연결하여) things are so deplorable nowaday that; [요즘 세상을 보면]은 (in) these days 만으로 충분하다.
• 어디에 갔는가 싶어 한심스럽다 -  I wonder what has become of ~; ([그 열정이 거의 식어버린 것이 한심스럽다]의 뜻으로 보아) I quite regrest to find their eagerness is almost gone: It is regrettable (deplorable) that ~ is almost gone.
• 우리는 ... 노력을 늦추어서는 안 된다 - we must continue (keep) our efforts at any cost; we must not slacken(relax) our efforts even for a moment.
• 올바른 민주주의를 확립하다 - set up(establish) a real democracy firm.

 

<구문 연구>

1. 첫 문장은 (a) [요즘 세상을 보면 한심스러워서 해방직후의 ... 의심스럽다] 처럼 바꾸어 표현하면 so ~ that 구문을 써서 Things are so deplorable these days that I wonder whta has become of ... (b) 원문대로 [해방직후에는 ... , 요즘에는 그 열정이 없어벼버린 것을 보면 한심스럽다]로 하여 Just after ... , people were eager for ... , but nowadays I regret to see ... 뒤에다 (I should say) Things have become truly deplorable of late. 쯤을 덧붙여 보면 좋겠다. (c) [해방 직후에는 ... 대단했다]까지로 일단 끊어서 Just after ... , people were so keen to democratize ... . But now I wonder what has become fo their devotin, so deplorable things have become of late. 처럼 옮겨 보아도 좋겠다.
2. 둘째 문장은 (a) we must not slacken our efforts to ~ (b) we must strive hard and long to ~ 처럼 각기 부정과 긍정의 두 가지 표현으로 나타내 볼 수 있다.

(1) Things are so deplorable these days that I wonder what has become fo that popular enthusiasm for democratization which marked the years directly after the 1945 Liberation of Korea. Anyway we must not slacken our efforts even for a moment to firmly establish a real democracy here in Korea.

(2) Just after the 1945 Liberation (of Korea), people were eager for democratization, but nowadays I regert to see(note) that their eagerness is almost gone. Things have become truly(very) deplorable lately. Nevertheless, we must strive hard and long to set up a real democracy here in Korea.
