현재 경찰국가라고 볼 수도 없는 여러 나라에도 군대가 있는데 그것은 주로 대외적인 자위을 위해서이기도 하지만, 또한 국내에서 일어나는 대규모 반란을 진압하거나 지진 따위의 이변에 대처하기 위한 것이기도 하다.

 

<표현 연구>

• 경찰국가 - a police state.
• ~라고는 할 수 없다 - cannot properly be called; can not be branded as ... ; do not deserve the name of (police state).
• 군대 - armed force(strength); army.
• 대외적인 자위를 위해 - for self-defence against any attack from the outside; for self-defence against any outside attack; to defend itself against intruders; in preparation against possible invasion.
• 국내에서 일어나는 - ([국내에서의]로 생각하여) at home; within the border-line; within the boundary; within the borders(borders 처럼 복수로 처리).
• 대규모의 반란 - large-scale riotings(disturbances; rebellions; revolts); a large scale 처럼 phrase를 만든 후 [반란] 다음에 놓을 수도 있다.
• ~을 진압하다 - quell; suppress; deal with; cope with; put down(cf, put out 진화하다).
• 지진 따위의 이변 - natural calamities such as earthquake disasters. [이변]은 calamity; eventualtiy 이지만 여기서는 natural disaster라고 하는 편이 보다 명확하다.
• 대처하다 - (natural disasters<calamities>에 [대처]하는 것이므로) prepare against; cope with.

 

<구문 연구>

1. [군대가 있는데 그것은 ...] 부분의 [그것은]은 it로 받으면 문장이 매우 불명확해진다. 따라서 이것은 전체를 한 sentence로 묶어서 (a) Nowadays, nations which ... possess their own amred forces chiefly to ... , and also to ... (b) Nowaday, nations ... possess their own armed strength, which is to be used chiefly for ... and also for .... 처럼 표현하는 편이 좋겠다.
2. [국내에서 일어나는]도 표현 연구에 있는 것처럼 at home; within the borders 따위를 꼭 넣지 않아도 충분히 그런 뜻이 담겨 있다. rioting 이나 earthquake 에 대비한다고 하면 [국내의 일]임이 자명한 것이다.
3. 번역(1)에서 or 다음에 to, (2)에서 or 다음에 with를 각각 되풀이 해주는 편이 보다 분명하게 해주는 효과가 있다.

• 외부로부터의 공격에 대한 우리의 자위력은 제한이 되어 있다 - Our capacity for self-defence against any outside attack is limited.
• 그들은 반란을 그럭저럭 진압할 수 있었다 - They managed to suppress(pacify, put down, get under) the revolt(rebellion).
