정치, 사회 - 115

직업이란 일면 인간이 생활을 유지하는 수단이기도 하지만, 다른 면에서는 인간사회에서 개개인에게 분담된 일을 수행하는 것이기고 하다. 단순히 생계를 유지하기 위한 계속적인 활동은 직업이라기보다 오히려 [생업]이라고 해야 망땅하겠다. 이와 같은 인간활동이라면 인간이 생존해가야 하는 한 미개사회에서도 찾아볼 수가 있는 것이다.

 

<표현 연구>

• 직업 - 여기에서는 [생업]과 대조시켜 말하고 있으므로 가장 보편적인 occupation이 적절하다. 또는 vocation 도 가능하겠다.
• 일면 ... 다른 면으로는 - on the one hand ... on the other (hand); ... but on the other hand ; ... and also ~; and at the same time.
• 생활을 유지하는 수단 - a means of livelihood; a means of earning a livelihood. [인간이]는 [생계를 유지하는] 것은 당연히 인간이므로 그냥 a means of ~ 만으로 충분하다. cf. [생계를 유지하다] to earn(gain, get, make, obtain] a [one's] livelihood, earn(make) a [one's] living.
• 개개인에게 분배된 일 - an individually alloted job (in human society); the task (work) alloted to each lidividual (in human society).
• 수행하다 - perform, carry out; ([... 의 수행]으로 옮기면) the performance of ...
• 단순히 생계를 유지하기 위한 계속적인 활동 - continuous activities only to make a living; continuous activities for only gaining food and clothing; continuous activities, if only to earn one's bread.
• 생업 - [직업]과 같은 뜻이지만 여기서는 [살아가기 위해 하는 일]이라는 의미로 occupation 과 대비하여 쓴 것이므로 'a working for living' 이나 'a work for living'으로 표현한다.
• ~라고 해야 마땅하다 - should be properly called ~; be rather than ...
• 인간이 생존해가야 하는 한 - so long as man must maintain his existence; so long as man must exist.
• 미개사회 - an uncivilized(savage( society; undeveloped society.
• 찾아볼 수가 있다 - ([인간활동]을 주격으로 하여) can be observed; can be seen.

 

<구문 연구>

1. 첫 문장은 [직업]을 주격으로 삼고 (a) On the one hand the occupation is ... , on the other hand it is ...(The occupation is ..., but on the other hand(at the same time) it is also the performance (carrying out) of ... (b) An occupation is ... and also ...
2. 두 번째 sentence는 [(~을 위한) 계속적인 활동]을 주격으로 세우고 (a) Continuous activities only to ... should be properly called ... , and not the occupation. (b) Continuous activities only to ... , are rather than the occupation above mentioned. (Continuous activities just for the sake of making a living).
3. 마지막 문장은 주어를 such activities 로 하고 can be ovserved (seen) ... 으로 받으면 된다. [~이 생존해가야 하는 한]은 so long as 로 인도하는 부사절로 꾸며본다.

• 그의 행위는 비난을 받아야 하지만 일면 동정의 여지가 있다 - His action is to be blamed, but on the other hand(at the same time) we must sympathize with him.
• 각자 분담된 일이 있다 - Each has his own alloted task.
• 그는 소설라라기보다는 오히려 시인이다 - He is not so much a novelist as a poet. He is a poet rather than a novelist.
• 살아있는 한 무슨 일이든 해야 한다 - So long as we live, we have some work to do.

(1)  On the one hand an(one's) occupation is a means of livelihood, on the other (hand) it is the performance of an individually alloted job in human society. Continuous activities just to make a living should be properly called working for a living, and not an occupation. Nevertheless so long as man must maintain his existence, such subsistence acitivities can be observed even in a savage society.

(2) An occupation is a means of earning a livelihood and also the performance of an individually alloted job in human society. Continuous activities, if only to get food and clothing, are 'a work for living' rather than the occupation above mentioned. Such subsistence activities, so long as man must exist can be seen even any primitive society.
