과학, 기술 - 94

우리는 과학적 발전, 발견, 발명 및 자연계의 정복에 있어서 일찍이 없었던 경이로운 시대에 살고 있다. 우리는 모든 방면에서 기록을 세우고 있다. 그러나 인간성 자체는 어떨까? 전보다 나빠진 것은 아니겠지만 분명 그렇게 좋아진 것도 아니다.

 

<표현 연구>

• 과학적 발전 - scientific advance; the progress(advancement) of science.
• 자연계의 정복 - the control of nature; man's mastery over nature. [자연계]는 the natural world 나 the realm of nature 이지만 nature만으로 충분한 경우가 많다.
• 일찍이 없었던 경이로운 시대 - in the most marvellous age on record(in history); the most wonderful age the world has ever known(unparalleled in history).
• 기록을 세우다 - establish records; set(make) new records.
• 모든 방면에서 - in all directions; all round; in every field.
• 인간성 자체 - human nature itself; humanity itself.
• ~는 어떨까? - what about ...? ; what can we say about...?
• 나빠지다 - get(be) worse; become(grow) worse; be aggravated.
• 좋아지다 - get(be) better; become(grow) better.

 

<구문 연구>

1. 첫 문장은 We are living in ~ 으로 시작해 the most marvellous age (that) the world has ever known 이나 the most wonderful age in history 로 연결한다. 전자의 경우 that은 생략이 가능하다. [~에 있어서]의 부분은 with respect(regard) to 따위가 이끄는 부사구로 정리하여 문미나 문두에 놓는다.
2. [~는 어떨까?]는 What about ~? 로 해결할 수 있는데 이 경우 about가 How, What 등의 의문사와 동반하여 상대방의 의사를 물을 때는 동사가 생략된다. Ex. How about tea?
3. 마지막 문장은 (a) [비록 전보다 악화되었다고는 할 수 없지만 또한 개선의 징후도 없다]처럼 고쳐서 Although we can't say ...., there is no sing of ... either. 식으로 처리하든가, (b) 완전한 sentence로 꾸미지 않고 Not worse than before, I think, but not so much better 처럼 옮겨보아도 좋다.

 

<참고 예문>

• 네가 일을 처리하는 방법이 마음에 안 든다 - I am not satisfied with the manner (that or in which) you have done it.
• 이것은 일찍이 없었던 큰 전쟁이었다 - This is the greatest war on record(in history).
• 이렇게 문명이 개화된 시대에는 그런 것을 생각할 수도 없다 - That cannot be thought of in this enlighteded age.

(1) We are living in the most marvellous age the world has ever known with respect to scientific advance, discoveries, inventions and the control of nature. We are establishing records all around. But what about human nature itself? Not worse than before, I think, but certainly not much better.

(2) With regard to the progress of science, discoveries, inventions and man's mastery over nature, we are living in the most wonderful age in history. We are setting records in all directions. But what can we say about human nature itself? Although we can't positively say that it has grown worse than before, there is no sign fo improvement, either.
