과학, 기술 - 96

미국의 아폴로 우주계획은 인간에게 새로운 탐험의 시대를 열어놓았다. 아폴로 우주선은 여섯 번이나 인간을 달세계로 운반하였고 또한 우주정류장으로 날아서 몇 주일에 걸친 과학적 조사를 수행하게 하였으며 소련과의 우주협조를 할 수 있는 교량을 마련해주었다. 우주인들은 여러가지 기기와 카메라를 사용하여 우주의 멀리 떨어져있는 별들을 탐색하고 지구의 모습을 촬영했다.

• ~과 우주협조를 할 수 있는 교량 - a bridge of space cooperation with ~; the way for the space cooperation betwen ~; (open up) a new avenue to space cooperation with ~.
• 교량을 마련하다 - form(build) a bridge of ~; open up a new avenue to ~; provide a chance to ~; clear the way for ~.
• 우주인 - an astronaut; a cosmonaut; a spaceman.
• 여러가지 기기 - various instruments. 여기서는 machine는 어울리지 않는다.
• 우주의 멀리 떨어져 있는 별들 - stars in the distant corner of the universe; stars in deep space which are far away from us; a distant planet.
• 탐색하다 - make a search for 이지만 우주탐험에서 쓰는 용어로는 probe가 흔히 쓰인다.
• 지구의 모습 - Earth's features; the features of our planet.

 

<구문 연구>

1. 첫 문장은 The Appolo Project of ...를 주어로 놓고 술부는 established(opened up) ~로 잇는다. succeed in ~ ing 을 써도 된다. 시제는 단순과거나 현재완료 중 어느 것을 선택해도 된다.
2. 두 번째 sentence는 좀 복잡하다. 우선 [아폴로 우주선]을 주어로 삼고 (a) [인간을 달세계로 운반하였다](=carried men to the moon), (b) [인간을 우주정거장으로 날랐다]( = ferried them to a space station), (c)[몇 주일에 걸친 과학적 조사를 수행하게 하였다](= enabled them to carry out scientific works for weeks), (d) [소련과의 우주협조를 할 수 있는 교량을 마련해주었다] (=formed a bridge of space cooperation with ...) 의 네 부분으로 나뉘는데, (c) 부분은 분사구문으로 줄여 enabling (which enabled) them to ~ 로 하거나 아주 간단히 for weeks of scientific work 처럼 부사구로 처리해 버리는 방법도 있다. (d) 부분은 그대로 직역해도 되지만 [앞으로 미소의 우주협조가 보다 잘 이뤄 질 수 있다는 가능성을 증명했다] 쯤으로 고쳐도 되겠다.

While in space and using instruments and cameras, the astronauts probed stars in distant corners of the universse and photographed Earth's features.

The Apollo spacecrafts transported men to the moon in six flights, carried them to a space station which enabled them to carry out scientific work for weeks, and provided the possibility of a better Russian-American space cooperation in the future. While in space and with the aid of various insturments and cameras, the astronauts probed stars in deep space and photograaphed various features of our own planet.
