과학, 기술 - 98

우리가 살고 있는 이 세계는 여러가지 이상한 물질과 놀라운 일들로 가득 차 있는 우주 속에서 회전하고 있다. 우리는 일상생활에서 감각기관을 통해 온갖 종류의 물질과 접촉하게 되고 또한 열, 광, 전기 따위가 작용하는 방법을 알게 된다. 우리는 이런 것들을 너무나 잘 알고 있기 때문에 그런 것들이 왜 일어나고 어떻게 생기는지 서로 어떤 관계에 있는지를 찬찬히 생각해 보지 않는 것이다.

 

<표현 연구>

• 우리가 살고 있는 이 세계 - this world on which we live; this planet on which we live.
• 이상한 물질과 놀라운 일들 - strange substances and astonighing(marvelout) events.
• ~로 가득 차 있는 우주 - a wonderful universe filled with ~; the universe full of ~.
• 회전하다 - revolve; rotate; gyrate 따위의 표현이 있지만 여기서는 [움직이다]처럼 보아 move가 가장 무난할 듯.
• 일상생활에서 - on one's daily life; as the day pass.
• 감각기관을 통해 - [감각기관]은 a sense (sensory) organ 이지만 여기서는 그냥 through our senses 로 하거나 [감각]을 주어로 하여 our senses (bring us into contact)처럼 해결할 수도 있다.
• ~와 접촉하게 되다 - come into contact with ~; (주어를 [감각]으로 삼으면) ~ bring us into contact with ~.
• 광, 열, 전기 따위가 작용하는 방법 - the (different) ways in which heat, light, electricity, etc. act; the ways how heat ..., act differently.
• 일어나다 - happen, take place.
• 서로 어떤 관계에 있는지(를) - how they are related to one another; what relations they have to one another; how they are interrelated.
• 찬찬히 생각해보다 - think seriously of; give (them) a thought; stop to think; think hard.

 

<구문 연구>

1. 첫 문장은 (a) [우리가 살고 있는 이 세계]를 주어로 하고 moves in a wonderful universe filled with ... 로 이어가든가, (b) [우주]를 subject 로 바꾸어 옮겨보는 방법도 있다.
2. 둘 째번 sentence 는 (a) our senses를 주어로 하면 our senses bring us into contact with ... 처럼 타동사 구문이 되고, (b) we 를 subject로 세우면 we come into contact with ... and get acquainted with .... 처럼 된다.
3. 마지막 sentence는 so ~ that 구문과 too ~ to 구문을 각각 이용하여 옮겨본다.
