과학, 기술 - 100

희랍인들이 기원전에 수세기 동안이나 걸려서 생각한 원소의 문제를 우리는 초등학교에서 거뜬히 배워버린다. 희랍인은 사변적인 기초 위에 서 있는 것인데 반하여 현대의 원소관은 실험적 사실에다 바탕을 두고 있다. 실제문제로서 학문적으로 주입된 지식은 사색으로 연마된 것이 아니기 때문에 사변적 지식보다 하위에 있는 것이다.

<구문 연구>

1. 첫 문장은 We can learn with ease(We can easily learn)으로 시작하여 [...한 원소의 문제]를 목적어로 삼는다. 문두에 It is true that ~를 보충하여 we can ~ 을 종속절로 처리하면 문장이 보다 정돈된다.
2. 두 번째 문장은 (a) 원문 그대로 the Greek conception of ..., while that of ours in the modern age is ... 처럼 옮기거나, (b) 우리 말을 약간 보충하여 [그 두 원관 사이에는 어떤 차이가 분명 있을 것이다. 왜냐하면 후자는 사변적인 기초 위에 ... 반하여 현대의 원소관은 ...]처럼 꾸면, there is a further difference between them, because the latter ... while the former .... 로 의역이 된다.
3. 마지막 문장은 주어를 any knowledge로 하고 술부를 stand on a lower level than .. 으로 한다. [...이 아니기 때문에] 부분은 부사절로 꾸며 because it is not reflective 로 하거나, 분사구문을 만들어 lacking (=because it lacks) refinement by meditation 으로 처리한다.

(1) We can learn with ease the primary(elementary) school course the conception of the elements which the Greeks took several centuries before Christ to develop. However, the Greek conception of the elements was based upon speculation while that of ours in the modern age is based on experimental facts. Nevertheless, any knowledge gained through the cramming process of school education stands on a lower leverl than speculative knowledge, because it is not reflective.

(2) It is true that we can easily learn in the elementary school course the concept of the elements which the Greeks made a study of for a span of several centuries before Christ. However there is a further difference between them, because the latter had built up their conception of the elements on thoughtful speculation while the former developed it on the baiss of experimental facts. Nevertheless any knowledge gained by cramming in through school education stands on a lower level than that gained by speculation because it lacks refinement by meditation.
