지구는 태양계에 속하는 행성의 하나이다. 은하에는 그밖에 10억 개의 별이 있으며 가장 먼 것은 태양에서 몇 천 만 광년이나 떨어져 있다. 광대한 우주에 비해 우리 지구와 그 위에 살고 있는 인간들이 얼마나 작은가를 우리는 알게 될 것이다.

<구문 연구>

1. 첫 sentence는 The earth is a planet(one of the planets)로 main part를 삼고 [...에 속하는] 부분은 분사나 관계대명사 구문으로 처리한다.
2. 둘째 문장은 [은하에는 ... 이 있다]와 [가장 먼 별은 ...떨어져 있다]의 두 부분이 된다. 앞 부분은 The Milky Way has ... 로 하든가, There are ... in the Milky Way로 옮기고 후반부는 the farthest of which are ... 로 하면 가장 간결하게 된다. 물론, and some of them are ... 처럼 등위절로 처리해도 된다.
3. 마지막 문장에서 [얼마나 ... 가를 알 수 있을 것이다]는 [이것이 얼마나 ..가를 보여줄 것이다(깨닫게 해줄 것이다)]처럼 타동사 구문으로 꾸며보면 This will show how ...; This will realize us how ...; This will make us realize how ~ 식의 표현이 된다.
