기후, 계절 - 4

 

일년 내내 봄밖에 없는 고장에 사는 사람들은 계절의 변화, 가령 여름의 더위나 겨울의 추위를 맛볼 길이 없다. 변화란 정말 즐거운 것이다. 대학 생활에서도 시험이 있고, 클럽 활동이 있고 연구 그룹 따위가 있어야 의미가 있는 법이다.

일년 내내 봄밖에 없는 고장 : areas where they have a spring-like climate all the year, regions where the climate is as mild as spring all the year round.

 

계절의 변화 : the changes of seasons, changes를 복수형으로 한다. <사계절이 돌아가면 오는 것>이기 때문이다. a change of season은 <환절기>의 듯이다.

 

여름의 더위나 겨울의 추위 : the heat of summer or the cold(rigors) of winter, the summer heat or the winter cold.

 

맛볼 길이 없다 : <길>에 구애되어 애쓰지 말고 <맛볼 수 있다>로 보아, cannot appreciate 로 해버리면 가장 간결하다. appreciate 대신 experience 도 가능하다.

 

즐거운 것이다 : <즐겁다> 는 형용사는 merry, pleasant, happy, cheerful, delightful, enjoyfable, sweet 처럼 한없이 많다. 여기에서는 <변화를 즐기다>로 보아, enjoyable 이 적합하다.

 

대학생활 : (in) college life, a university life 라고는 보통 하지 않는다.

 

클럽 활동 : club activities, activities 처럼 복수로 한다. 또는 club meeting 으로 해도 된다.

 

연구 그룹 ; research groups. <클럽 활동>이나 <연구 그룹> 따위를 총칭하여 extra curricular activities 라고 하므로, such extracurricular activities as ... 또는 extracurricular activities such as ... 처럼 보충하여 표현할 수 있다.

 

의의가 있는 법이다 ; <의의가 있게 만든다>로 보아 make (it) more meaningful, make (it) worthwhile to have. <...법이다>는 일반적인 <진리> 따위를 말하는 것이므로 영어에서는 그냥 현재시제로 하면 된다. Ex. <의의가 있는 생활> a wellspent life, a life worth living, a purposeful life. <그 사업으로 그는 의의있게 살 수 있었다> The work made his life worth living(significant).

 

(구문 연구)

 

1. Those who ... 를 주어로 하여 cannot appreciate 로 연결하는 것이 가장 좋은 방법이다. If one lives in ..., he cannot ~ 도 가능하지만 어색하고 장황스럽다.

 

2. 후반의 <... 있고 ... 있어야 ~한 법이다> 부분은 it is ... that ~ 의 강조구문을 이용하면 거뜬히 처리할 수 있다. 즉 <대학생활에 있어 그것을 의의있게 만드는 것은 ... 이다>로 고쳐서 it is 다음 강조 부분에 <시험, 클럽 활동, 연구 그룹>을 넣으면 된다. 이 때 동사의 <수>에 주의를 해야한다.

 

3. What 절을 주어로 하여 선행시켜도 강조의 뜻이 드러난다. 즉, What makes (college life) more meaningful 처럼 된다. 또는 it is more meaningful (to lead) because fo ~ 로 처리해도 된다.

1. Those who live in areas where they have a spring-like climate all the year cannot appreciate the changes of seasons, with the heat of summer or the cold of winte. Change is realy an enjoyable thing. In college life, too, it is change caused by examination, club activities and group research that makes it worthwhile to have.

 

2. Those who live in regions where the climate is as mild as spring all the year round cannot experience the changes of the seasons with the summer heat or the winter cold. Such changes is enjoyable indeed. In college life, too, it is more meaningful (to lead) because of examinations and various kinds of extracurricular activities such as club meetings and groupresearch.
