기후, 계절 - 2.

 

어제 서울 지방에 호우가 내려서 가옥과 거리와 농토가 물에 잠겼다. 어제 아침에는 서울에서 한 소년이 불어난 강물에 휩쓸려 가서 아직도 행방불명인 채이다.

서울 지방 ; the Seoul area, Seoul and its vincinity, Seoul and other surrounding areas.

호우가 내렸다 : rained heavily, a heavy rain(heavy rains) visited(pounded) ~ , there was a heavy rainfall(torrential rain, downpour, cataracts of rain). 집중 호우 : a localized torrential downpour.

 

물에 잠기다 : be flooded, be inundated, be submerged ; <(호우)를 주어로 하면> flood, inundate.

 

불어난 강물에 휩쓸리다 : be swept into a swollen river, be carried off by the torrent of a swollen river, be carried into a stream and swept away by a swollen river.

 

행방불명이 되다 : be(get) lost, be heard of no more, be missing.

 

아직도 ... 채이다 : still 을 써서 나타낼 수도 있지만 동사 remains 을 이용하여 remains missing 으로 하면 뜻을 충분히 살릴 수 있다.

 

(구문 연구)

 

1. 첫 문장은 a. There was a torrential rain in Seoul and ... and homes, streets and farms were submerged ... 처럼 하던가 b. <호우>를 주어로 하여 Heavy rains pounded ... , flooding ... 처럼 분사 구문 형식을 취하여 해결해도 된다.

 

2. 두 번째 문장은 앞 부분은 주어를 one boy로 하여 was swept into ~ 나 was carried off ~ 로 연결하여 정리하고, 뒷 부분은 and 를 이어서 he has been missing 처럼 현재완료형을 이용하거나, 단순 현재형을 써서 he remains missing 식으로 나타낼 수 있다.

* 그 소년은 며칠 전부터 집을 나간 채 아직 행방불명이다. ; The boy has been missing from his home for some days.

* 50명이나 되는 사람들이 홍수로 행방불명이 되었다. ; No less than fifty persons were lost in the flood.
