기후, 계절 - 3

 

창경원에 벚꽃이 피려 한다. 한 직원은 내주 말에 만개할 것이라고 말했다. (동화은행, 62)

 

(표현 연구)

 

벚꽃이 피다 : cherry blossoms bloom, cherry flowers blossom. <피다>는 bloom, blossom, flower 가 흔히 쓰이지만 이밖에도 open, come out, come into flower 따위도 가능하다. Ex <꽃이 피었다> The flowers are out. <피기 시작하다>는 begin to bloom(come out) / come(turn) into flower 처럼 표현한다.

 

한 직원 : <(창경원의) 한 직원>의 뜻이므로 one of the staff there, the staff 대신 the personnel 을 써도 된다. 둘 다 전체를 가리키는 말이므로 반드시 one of the ~ 처럼 써야 된다는 점에 유의할 것. 또는 <그 곳의 사무직원>으로 보아 an office worker there 도 가능하다.

 

내주 말에 : weekend 의 경우에는 on or at 가 되지만 이 문장에서는 <내주 말까지는 (만개할 것이다)>의 뜻이므로 by next weekend 로 쓰는 것이 옳다. Ex. <이번 주말에> on(at) weekend, at the week's end/ <...에서 주말을 보내다> stay at ... over the weekend. <주말인 11월 18일에 회합이 있었다> They had a meeting on the weekend of november 18.

 

만개하다 : come into full bloom(blossom, flower), reach their best. cf. <만개하고 있다> be in full bloom, be at (their) best, be all out.

 

... 것이라고 말했다 : said that they will ... said 와 시제를 맞추어서 would 로 할 필요는 없다. 꽃이 피는 것은 <내주 말>이니까. predict(tell in advance)를 써서 ~ predict that they will ... 또한 <만개>(a full bloom)를 직접 목적으로 삼아사 predict a full bloom by next week end 로 할 수도 있다. Ex. <풍년이 들 것이라고 말하다> predict a good harvest / <지진이 일어날 것이라고 말하다> predict that there will be an earthquake.

 

(구문 연구)

 

1. 첫째 문장은 'be about to ~ '를 써서 쉽게 해결한다. 이밖에도 be going to ~ very soon 도 쓸 수 있다. Ex. <내가 막 말하려던 참이었는데 네가 참견을 했다> As I was about to say, when you interrupted. / <그가 막 떠나려 하고 있을 때 내가 그곳에 도착했다. He was about to leave the place when I arrived there.

 

2. ~ said (that) they will ... or ~ predicts (a full bloom) 구문이 가장 평이하고 보편적이다.

 

3. <~에 의하면 ...라고 한다>로 생각하여 according to ~ 를 이용할 수 있다. according to one of the staff there or according to what an office worker there said(says) 처럼 쓸 수 있다.

 

4. it will(would) be around next weeken that ~ 처럼 it is .... that ~ 의 구문도 가능하다.

 

영작.

 

1. The cherry flowers in Changgyonwon Park are about to bloom. one of the staff there said (that) they will come into full bloom by next weekend.

 

2. The cherry blossoms are about to bloom(open) at Changgyongwon Park. An office worker there predicts a full bloom by next weekend.
