기후, 계절 - 5

 

이제 가을이 왔다.한국에서는 가을을 천고마비의 계절이라고 하고 또 등화가친의 계절이라고 한다. 가을이 되면 우리는 높은 하늘 아래서 풍성한 추수를 즐기며 마음의 양식을 찾는다. (중앙일보사, 69)

천고마비의 계절 : 그대로 직역하면 a season with the sky clear and blue, and with horses growing stout 또는 a season the sky is clear and blue and (when) the horses grow stout.

 

등화가친의 계절 : a good season for reading. 관용구로 burn the midnight oil (밤늦게까지 독서[일]하다)이 있다. 또한 평범한 어구를 이용하여 s season in which one can enjoy(sit) reading far into the night 도 써봅직하다. Ex. <등화가친의 게절이 되었다> The good season for reading comes.

 

가을이 되면 : when autumn comes (round), when autumn sets in, in autumn.

 

풍성한 추수 : a good(a rich, an abundant) harvest, a heavy(bumper, record) crop, a large yield. Ex. <올해는 풍성한 추수를 거둘 가망이 있다> There is every prospect of bumper crops for this year.

 

즐기다 : <풍성한 추수를 즐기다>이므로 rejoice over(a abundant harvest) or enjoy (a rich harvest) 처럼 rejoice over 나  enjoy를 쓴다. 또는 <풍성한 추수를 즐기며>를 부사구로 처리하여 <~에 흡족해하며> contented(satisfied) with good harvests 로 할 수 있다.

 

마음의 양식 : 직역하면 food for thought, mental food, spiritual food, food for intelligence, things that supply us with mental food. 여기서는 <책>의 뜻이 분명하므로 things(something) that enrich(es) one's mind로 하든가 또한 보다 구체적으로 something to read로 처리해 버릴 수 있다.

 

(구문 연구)

 

1. <가을을 ~  라고 한다>는 능동태와 수동태가 모두 가능하다. 즉, Autumn  is often called ~ or We often describe autumn ... as 가 된다. 이 때 in Korea의 위치에 유의하도록 한다. 가장 자연스러운 자리는 .... is often called in Korea ~ or We often describe autumn in Korea as ... 이다. 물론 문두에 둘 수고 있다.

 

2. <...의 계절>은 a season when or a season in which 처럼 관계 부사나 관계대명사를 이용해서 꾸밀 수도 있지만 좀 더 간결하게 a seaso with ... 로 처리할 수도 있다.

 

3. <....을 즐기며 ...을 찾는다>에서는 <마음의 양식을 찾는다>가 main idea가 되고 <풍성한 추수를 즐기며>는 부수적인 것으로 돌려 현재분사를 써서 분사구문을 만들어 볼 수 있다. ~ while, rejoicing over(enjoying) ... 처럼 된다. 또는 과거 분사를 써서 ~, contented with ... 처럼 해결하는 방법도 있다. 즉, we rejoice oer ... and seek ... 의 내용에서 seek 부분을 main idea로 부각시키는 것이다. 또는 while we delight in the high blue skies and contentment over good harvest 로 끝부분을 맺어도 된다.

In autumn, we look for something to read which will add to our mental development while we delight in the high blue skies and contentment over good harvests.
