도서, 독서 - 58

답장이 너무 늦어서 죄송합니다. 실은 한 사흘쯤 집을 떠나 있다가 겨우 어제야 돌아왔습니다. 말씀하신 서적은 생물학에 관한 것으로는 제가 읽은 것 중에서 가장 좋은 책입니다. 필요하시면 빌려드리겠습니다. 언제든지 형편이 좋으실 때에 오십시오.

 

<표현 연구>

• 답장이 너무 늦다 - be so late in answering (you). ([답장이 늦어진 것]으로 하여 명사구로 정리하면) (for) one's delay in answering your letter.
• ~ 해서 죄송하다 - I am sorry for ~, I apologize for ~.
• 실은 - The fact is ~, as a matter of fact, to be quite honest(솔직히 말해서).
• 집을 떠나 있다 - stay(stop) away from home, be out, be not in (at home), be away, be gone from home.
• 사흘쯤 - ([며칠 동안}) for a few days, for two or three days.
• 말씀하신 서적 - the book you referred to(spoke of), the book that you mentioned.
• 생물학에 관한 책 - a book on biology, a biological book.
• 필요하시면 - ([원하시면]) if you wish, ([읽고 싶으시면]) if you should like to read it.
• 언제든지 형편이 좋으실 때 - any time (that is) convenient to you, any time you feel like at, at your convenience, whenever it suits you, in your own good time.

 

<구문 연구>

1. 두번 째 문장은 (a) [말씀하신 서적] (the book that you mentioned) 을 그대로 주어로 삼아서 'is one of the best ...'로 연결해도 되지만, (b) [말씀하신 서적에 관해서는](as to the book you ~) 처럼 우선 부사적으로 선행시켜 놓고 다시 it 로 받아 주어로 삼는 편이 더 자연스럽다. 그냥 단도직입적으로 'it is one of the best ...'처럼 하지 않고 'I believe that ~' 같은 도입부를 두면 훨씬 문장이 다듬어진다.
2. [생물학에 관한 것으로는] 쉽게 (a) 'for a book on biology' 로 해도 되지만, (b) 좀 표현의 묘를 살려 clause 로 나타내보면 'as biological books go' 나 'so far as biological books are concerned' 따위가 된다.
3. [필요하시면 ...빌려드리겠습니다]는 (a) 평범하게 'I shall be pleased to ...' 로 옮겨도 되지만, (b) only too glad(pleased) 따위의 표현을 써서 강조해도 좋겠다. 또는 (c) 'You are welcome to it' 처럼 관용적인 표현을 써보는 방법도 있다. [필요하시면]은 옮겨도 좋지만 꼭 넣지 않아도 뜻은 충분히 전달된다.
