도서, 독서 - 60

내가 서울에서 살고 있을 때 나는 고서점이 많이 있는 충무로에 가서 몇 시간이고 보내곤 했었다. 책꽂이에는 영어로 된 책이 가득 꽂혀 있었는데 대개가 첫 2,30 페이지는 여백에 연필로 쓴 주석이 가득 달려 있었고 수십 개의 단어나 어구에는 밑줄이 쳐져 있었다. 책 임자는 아마 공부를 열심히 하는 대학생이었을 터이고 처음에는 책을 독파할 각오를 단단히 하고 시작했을 것이다. 그 다음에는 페이지를 넘기자 노트 하나 적힌 것이 없이 말끔하였다. 분명 절망해서 중도에서 읽기를 집어치웠음이 분명하다.

 

<표현 연구>

<구문 연구>

1. [충무로에 자주 갔었다], [거기에는 고서점이 많이 있었다], [거기에서 몇 시간이고 보냈다]를 연결하여 단일문장으로 만든다. 술부는 used to ~ 나 would often ~ 를 이용하면 된다. [고서점이 많이 있는 충무로]는 관계부사 where 를 써서 해결한다.
2. [~에는 ... 이 가득 꽂혀 있었다]까지를 끊어서 독립시켜보는 것이 처리하기에 덜 복잡할 것이다.
3. [대개는 .... 달려 있었고], [수십 개의 ...쳐져 있었다]로 구성되는 sentence 이다. (a) [첫 2,30 페이지](the first twenty or thirty pages of them) 을 주어로 하여 [have + 목적어(their margins) + p.p. (filled with)] 로 해결하던가, (b) I 를 주어로 하여 'I noticed that ~ ' 으로 꾸며볼 수 있다.
4. [책 임자는 ... 것이다] 부분은 (a) The (former) owners must have been ... and he had apparently started ...' 로 하든가, (b) 첫 부분을 삽입구로 처리하여 The owner 와 동격으로 놓아 'probably earnest university students' 로 할 수도 있다.
5. [그 다음으로 ... 말끔하였다]는 (a) 'as (when) I turned the pages over, I found ~' (b) 'Turning the pages over, I found ~' 로 처리한다.
6. 마지막 문장은 따로 독립을 시켜도 되고 앞의 문장에 and 로 연결시켜도 그리 복잡하지 않다. (a) 'He must have given up ~' 나 (b) 'It must clear that he had ~' 구문으로 하되 시제에 유의해야 한다.

(1) When I was living in Seoul, I used to go to Chungmu-ro, where the second-hand bookstores are, and spend hours there. The shelves were full of English books. The first twenty or thirty pages of many of them had their margins filled with pencilled notes and there were dozens of words and phrases underlined. The owners, probably earnest university students, had started out very seriously, determined to master the books. Then, as I turned the pages over, I found clean white margins, with not a single note, and it was clear that the reader had given up the attempt in despair.
