도서, 독서 - 55

학생은 여가가 있을 때 도서관에 가는 것이 제일 좋다. 여러 외국 잡지에 나오는 삽화만 보아도 세계의 사정을 알게 되고 또한 식견을 넓히는데 도움이 될 것이기 때문이다.

 

<표현 연구>

• 여가가 있다 - have time to spare. have nothing particular to do.
• 여러 외국잡지에 나오는 삽화 - the illustrations on foreign magazines, all sorts of illustration which appear in foreign magazines.
• 세계의 사정을 알게 되다 - get acquainted withworld affairs. ([세계를 더 잘 알게 되다]의 뜻으로 보아) know the world better. ([삽화]를 주어로 한 타동사구문일 경우) ~ will inform him of world affairs.
• 견문을 넓히다 - extend one's (field of) vision, extend one's breadth of view, widen a range of one's knowledge.
• ~ 하는데 도움이 되다 - help one to ~, do one good by ~ ing, profit oneself by ~ ing, for ...

<구문 연구>

1. 분해하여 단문을 만들어보면 (a) [그들에게는 여가가 있다], (b) [그들에게 제일 도움이 되는 일은 도서관에 가는 일이다], (c) [외국잡지의 삽화는 우리에게 도움이 된다], (d) [그 삽화는 우리에게 세계의 사정에 대해 알려준다] (e) [우리는 식견을 넓혀야 된다] 처럼 된다.
2. [학생들은 역가가 있을 때]는 (a) when 으로 인도되는 평범한 부사절(when a student has time to spare)로 옮겨도 되지만, (b) [~에게는 (...가 제일 좋다)로 생각하면 'for a student who has nothing particualr to do' 처럼 부사구로도 능히 해결할 수 있다.
3. [도서관에 가는 것이 제일 좋다]는 (a) 부정사를 이용하여 'what is best for him to do'를 주어로 삼아 옮기는 방법도 있지만, (b) [학생이 가야 할 가장 좋은 장소(the best place for students to go) 부분을 (a) [삽화]를 주어로 삼아 'even the illustrations ... will be profitable to him, for they ~ '로 하던가, (b) [학생]을 주어로 내세워서 'They(he) will profit themselves(himself) even by ~, for ...' 형식으로 처리해도 된다. 또는 (c) [삽화 구경하기(simply looking at the illustrations)]를 주어로 하고 술부를 'will do him good'로 해결할 수도 잇다. 이 경우에는 그 뒷 부분을 'by giving him an opportunity to ...' 처럼 옮겨주어야 한다.

(1) When a student has time to spare, what is best for him to do is to go to some library. Even the illustraions in the foreign magazines will be profitable to him, for they will do much to inform him of world affairs and help him to widen the range of his knowledge.

(2) There is nothing like going to a library for a student who has nothing particualr to do. He will find profit in even just looking at the illustrations in foreign magazines, for he will get acquainted with world affairs and extend his field of vision through them.
