도서, 독서 - 52

요즘 대학생들은 서양의 것보다 우리나라의 고전작품을 더 즐겨 읽고있는 경향을 보이고 있다. 이것은 서양의 고전물이 대학생들 사이에서 보다 널리 읽히던 종전과는 달라진 점이다. 최근에 한 신문사에서 주요대학교 구내 및 주변에 있는 서점을 대상으로 실시한 조사에 의하면 베스트셀러 10위 중 한 가지만 제외하고 모두 한국의 고전인 것으로 나타났다.

 

<표현 연구>

• 서양의 것보다 우리나라 고전작품을 더 즐겨읽다 - prefer reading Korean classic to their counterparts, choose to read Korean classics rather than their western conterparts. [서양의 것]은 [서양 고전작품]을 뜻하므로 classics의 중복을 피하기 위해 conterparts 를 쓴다.
• 경향을 보이다 - show (develop) a tendency of ~ ing(to~), have a tendency to ~, tend to ~, there is a (growing) tendency of ~.
• 서양의 고전물이 더 널리 읽힌다 - Western classics win wider readership, western classics are more widely read, ~ command a wider audience.
• 대학생들 사이에서 - among college students, in college quarters.
• ~ 종전과는 달라진 점이다 - this is different from the past when(in which) ~, this is a departure from the past in which ~.
• 주요 대학교 구내 및 주변에 있는 서점을 대상으로 - at bookstors in and around major college campuses.
• 조사를 실시하다 - conduct (make) a survey, carry out a survey(trend study).
• 베스트 셀러 10 순위 - the top-ten bestsellers, the best ten in books.
• ~것으로 나타났다 - show that ~, turn out to be ~.

 

<구문 연구>

 

1. 첫 문장은 (a) [대학생들]을 주어로 삼아 '~ have shown(developed) a tendency of ....' 나 '~ tend to ...'로 하든가, (b) 'There is a tendency among college students of ... '처럼 할 수 있다. 또는 (c) [경향]을 주어로 하여 'A (marked) tendency of ~ is seen lately.' 로도 처리할 수 있다. 혹은 (d) 주어를 좀 보충하여 The reading habits 로 의역하여 'The reading habits of collegians have shown a tendency of ~ '식으로 옮겨도 된다.
2. 둘째 번은 평범하게 (a) This is the tendency (somewhat) different from what it used to be' 따위로 옮겨도 되지만 좀더 영어식 표현방법을 살려 (b) 'This was (is) a departure from the past in which ~ '로 할 수 있다. 또는 (c) 그냥 [과거에는 대학생들이 ~을 보다 많이 읽었다]로 해도 뜻이 편차없이 전달된다.
3. 마지막 문장은 (a) [...에 의하면]을 그대로 부사구로 살려 'according to a recent survey ...'로 하고 주어를 'the top ten bestsellers turned out to be ...'로 한다. (b) 'A recent survey'를 주어로 삼고 'showed that ...'를 술부로 놓은 방법도 있다.
