도서, 독서 - 51

독서를 할 때 주의를 기울여서 이해하고 감상하려고 노력한다면 우리는 곧 마음의 양식이 되는 서적을 알아낼 수 있고, [책 없는 궁전에서 살기보다는 차라리 책이 있는 초라한 방에서 살겠노라]고 말한 머콜리의 말에 수긍하게 될 것이다.

 

<표현 연구>

• 주의를 기울여서 - attentively, with care(attention), carefully.
• 이해하고 감상하다 - understand and appreciate(enjoy), understand and judge rightly.
• ~하려고 노력하다 - concentrate oneself on ~, take pains to ~, make an effort to ~.

<구문 연구>

1. 전체가 한 문장으로 되어 있어 좀 복잡한 것 같지만, 영어식 사고방식으로 정리하면 앞뒤가 정연해진다. 첫 부분인 후반절은 (a) 원문 그대로 'if you concentrate your effort with care on ~ when you read'처럼 해도 되지만, (b) [독서를 할 때]를 별도의 부사절로 만들지 말고 [주의깊게 읽고 ~ 노력한다면]으로 고쳐보면 'if we read with care, taking pains to ~'로 해결된다.
2. 본문은 [우리는 ...을 알아낼 수 있다]와 [...의 말에 수긍하게 된다]의 두 부분으로 이뤄진다. 주어는 전체적으로 통일하여 we 로 삼고 첫부분 동사는 (shall be able to) find out, 뒷부분은 agree with 가 된다. 문제는 이 뒷부분을 어떻게 해결하는가이다. [머콜리가 한 말에 수긍하다]이므로 (a) 'agree with Macaulay when he said that ...', 가 가장 적절하다. 물론 (b) 'agree with Macaulay on what he said ...' 식으로도 처리가 가능하다. 또한 각도를 달리하여 'realize(be convinced) that Macaulay truly said that ~'로도 생각해 볼 수 있다.
3. [책없는 궁전 ... 살겠노라] 부분은 'would rather ~ than ...' 구문을 이용하여 'he would rather live in ... than in ~'처럼 해결한다. 또는 'prefer ... rather than ~ 형식도이용할 수 있다.

• [책이 없는 집은 아무리 가구와 장식품이 우아해도 지성이 없고 특성이 없는 집이다] - A house without books is a mindless and characterless house, no matter how elegant the furniture and ornaments.

(1) If we read with care, taking pains to understand and appreciate, we shall soon find out the books which nourish our mind, and agree with Macaulay when he said that he would rather rather live in a garret with a library than in a palace without one.

(2) If we concentrate on what we read in order to understand and judge it rightly, we shall soon be able to find such books as(that will) supply us with mental food, and agree with Macaulay on what he once said; he preferred to live in a poor, wretched room with a library rather than in a palace without one.
