도서, 독서 - 53

최근 학생들의 책에 대한 생각이 달라졌다. 주간지 따위가 너무 많이 출판되어 학생들은 쓸모없는 뉴스를 쫓기에 바빠 참으로 가치 있는 책에 대한 애착심이 줄어든 듯하다

 

<표현 연구>

• 학생들의 책에 대한 생각 - students' views on books, the attitude of students toward books, the idea students have of what a book is.
• 주간지 - weekly magazines. [주간지 따위]라고 했으니 'weekly magazines and such, weekly magazines and cheap periodicals, catchpenny publications like weekly magazines' 로 하면 보다 정확한 표현이 된다.
• 너무나 많이 출판되다 - a vast number of ~ are published, a flood of ~ are published, ~ are increasing in number to an alarming extent.
• 쓸모없는 뉴스 - worthless news, useless gossips, good-for-nothing news.
• ~을 쫓기에 바쁘다 - be driven by idle curiosity about ~ ([~에 대한 쓸데 없는 호기심에 쫓기다]로 보아) be too busy running after ~, be too busy catching up with ~.
• 참으로 가치있는 책 - really good books worth reading, books of real value, books really worth reading.
• ~에 대한 애착심이 줄어들다 - be less attached to ~, become less concerned with ~, be detached from, become less interested in ~.

 

<구문 연구>

1. [최근 ... 달라졌다]는 (a) [오늘날의 학생들은 책에 대해 우리와는 아주 다른 견해를 가지고 있다]로 'Students of today have very different views ... from ours'로 해도 좋고, (b) [최근 책이 무엇인가(what a book is)에 대한 학생들의 생각에(in the idea students have of ~) 큰 변화(a tremendous)가 있다] 처럼 옮겨도 좋다. 또는 (c) 현재완료형으로 'there has been a remarkable change in the idea ~'처럼 표현해도 되지만 그 뒤를 그냥 of students 로 하지말고 반드시 (that) students have 로 하여 뜻에 혼란이 오지 않도록 한다. (d) 이밖에도 간단히 'students' vies on books'를 주어로 하여 have changed 를 술부로 삼아도 해결할 수 있다.
2. [... 가 너무 많이 출판되어] 부분은 (a) [수가 엄청나게 늘어서]로 생각하여 such ~ that 구문을 이용하면 'are increasing to such an alarming extent that (they seem ...)' 처럼 된다. (b) 그냥 [매우 많은 (a vast number of) 주간지가 있어서 ...]로 하여 'There is such a vast number of ... published that ~ '로 해도 된다. (c) such (so) ~ that 구문을 쓰지 않고 그냥 [엄청나게 많은 주간지가 쏟아져나와 학생들에게 쓸모없는 뉴스만을 읽게 하여 ...]로 하여 'A flood of ... swarm into [flood] (the student society) alluring ... and making them ...' 식으로 꾸며 볼 수 있다.
3. [~을 쫓기에 바빠]는 따로 떼어 'driven by ~' 나 'too busy ~ ing'처럼 삽입시키면 된다.
4. [쓸모없는 ~를 쫓다][애착이 줄어들다]는 모두 주어가 [학생]임을 잊지 말아야 한다.

<참고 예문>

• [에로 잡지가 너무 많이 출판되어 있다] - There is a flood of obscure magazines (in the city). The city is flooded with(deludged) with obscur(salacious) magazines.
• [그는 쾌락을 쫓기에 늘 바쁘다] - He is always busy seeking pleasure.
• [그는 매우 좋은 성적을 받았기 때문의 그의 부모는 그를 대학에 보내기로 했다] - He got such good records at school that his parents decided to sent him to a university.

(1) In recent years there have been a (remarkable) change in the idea students have of what a book is. A flood of weekly magazines are published so that students, too busy running after worthless news, seem to have become less interested in books of real values.

(2) Students of today have very different view of books from ours. Catchpenny publications like weekly magazines are increasing in number to such an alarming extent that moved by idle curiosity about the good-for-nothing gossip in them, they seem to have become less attached to the really great books worth reading.
