흔히들 말하기를 노인들은 잠을 많이 안 자도 된다고 하지만 이것은 옳지가 않다. 노인이라도 수면은 충분히 취해야 하는 것이다.

흔히들 말하기를 : <(흔히들 ~ 라고 말한다)> we often haer, people often hear, people often aay, is is often said that ~ .

 

잠을 많이 안 자도 된다 : <짧은 수면시간으로도 충분하다> <수면 시간이 짧아도 살아갈 수 있다>의 뜻이다. 따라서 <비교적 짧은 수면 시간>을 주어로 내세우면 comparatively short hours of sleep are enough (for ~ ) 로 해결이 된다. 또는 ~ cna get along with a little sleep 으로 표현할 수도 있다.

 

수면을 충분히 취하다 : have sufficient ( a certain amount of) sleep, get enough sleep, taek (have, enjoy) a good sleep.

 

... 해야 한다 : must ~ , it is necessary for ~ to ...

1. <흔히들 ~ 라고 말하지만 옳지가 않다>를 We often hear (It is often said) that ~ , which is not right 처럼 앞의 서술 전체를 관계 대명사 which 로 받아서 처리하는 것은 통상적인 방법이다. 이밖에도 <~라고 옳지 않게들 말하고 있다>로 생각하여 it is wrongly said that ~ 처럼 부사를 서서 번역하는 방법도 있다.

 

2. <노인은 조금만 자도 살아갈 수 있다>를 Old people can get along on comparatively short hours of sleep(with a little sleep) 처럼 <가다>를 명사로 바꿔 쓰는 연습을 충분히 하여 영어 특유의 명사 구문을 익히도록 한다. 즉, <조금만 자도> 부분이 comparatively short hours of sleep or a little sleep 으로 처리하는 것이다. Ex. 소년이 서울에 1년 간 살면 어른이 된다 ; one year of Seoul life will make a man of a boy.
