원료 가격이 계속 크게 오르자 이것은 원료의 대수입국인 영국에게 큰 타격이 되었지만, 특히 양모, 동, 주석 따위의 원료를 미국과 유럽에 대량으로 팔아먹는 파운드화 지역의 기타 여러 나라에게는 그것이 뜻하지 않았던 커다란 이득이 되었다.

<구문 연구>

1. 첫 문장은 [~되었지만]까지로 끊는다. (a) [원료가격이 크게 올랐다]로 일단 끊어서 The prices of raw materials soared(shot up, skyrocketed)로 하고 다음에 this로 받거나, 아래 번역문처럼 and로 이어 Great Britain 이라는 새로운 주어를 세운다. (b) [원료가격의 급등](= sharp rises in the prices of raw materials)을 주격으로 하여 ~ did mucy(serious) harm to ~ 처럼 처리할 수도 있다.
2. 두 번째 sentence는 (a) this를 주어로 하여 this meant a surprice boom to ~ 로 하거나 (b) [~의 기타 여러 나라](= the rest of the sterling area nations)를 주어로 세워서 the rest of the ... nations, big inporters ..., enjoyed an unexpected boom처럼 옮긴다.
