석유 가격의 인상과 석탄산업에 있어서 급격히 증대되는 원가 때문에 원자에너지 경제는 새로운 검토가 필요하게 되었다. 오늘날 원자에너지는 석유나 무연탄에서 얻는 에너지 가격보다 2, 3 배나 싼 것이 될 수 있다. 그러나 서독이나 그밖의 여러 나라에서 있어서는 소비 에너지의 절반 이상이 아직도 석유에서 나오고 있고 겨우 1퍼센트 정도가 우라늄에서 얻어지고 있다.
