윈스턴 처칠(Winston Churchill)은 불굴의 정신을 지닌 위대한 정치가였을 뿐만 아니라 누구에게나 사랑과 존경을 받는 인격자였다. 어떤 영국인은 [그분이 없었더라면 우리는 두 번에 걸친 세계대전을 제대로 헤어나지 못했을 것이다]라고 말했지만 어쨌든 틀림없이 그의 공적이 전세계의 모든 사람들의 기억에서 사라지지 않을 것이다.

• 위대한 정치가 - a great statesman. a politician은 정략가라는 뜻을 품고 있어 좋지 않은 뜻으로 쓰일 때가 흔히 있다.
• 사랑과 존경을 받다 - be respected and loved; be hold in high esteem.
• 인격자 - a man of (noble) character; a person of (sterling) character.
• 두 번에 걸친 세계대전 - the two great wars; the two world wars.
• 제대로 헤어나다 - cut one's way through ~ successfully; get through ~ well; come successfully through ~.

• 틀림없이 - undoubtedly 따위의 부사로 처리할 수도 있지만 it is quite certain that ~ 구문을 이용할 수도 있다. 또는 never fail to ~ 따위의 표현도 가능하다.

 

<구문 연구>

1. 첫 문장은 (a) not only ~ but also 구문을 이용하여 ~ was not only ... but also ~ 식으로 꾸며거나, (b) as well as 쓸 써서 ~ was a man of noble character ... , as well as ... 로 한다.
2. [~이 없었더라면 ... 못 했을 것이다]의 부분은 직접화법으로 subjunctive past perfect 의 구문 if it has not been for ~ 나 without ~를 써서 처리한다.
3. [어쨌든 ... 많을 것이다] 부분은 별도의 문장으로 독립시켜 (a) [그의 공적](= his great achievements)를 주어로 세워 will undoubtedly remain forever in the memory of ~ 로 연결시키거나, (b) it is quite certain (that) ~ 를 선행시켜 종속절의 주어를 his achievement 로 할 수도 있다.
