Pat : I couldn't believe it the other day when I saw whale meat for sale at the department store.
Nobu : Yes. I was surprised, too, but I was lucky enough to get a half kilo before it was sold out. I fried
some up last night. It was delicious.
Pat : You what? Are you serious?
Nobu : Sure. I had it with a bit of salt and ginger and soy sauce .....
Pat : No! How could you? It's terrible to eat whale meat.
Nobu : What do you mean? It's delicious.
Pat : No, I mean the whale is a protected animal. It's like eating panda bear. If people continue eating whale
meat, soon there won't be any whales left.
Nobu : I don't know about that. I read in the newspaper that Japan's whale meat comes from a kind of whale
that's plentiful.
Pat : That may be true but I'm still against it. Whales are huge, wonderful animals. They're intelligent ; they
can communicate with each other. They're mammals too, like us.
Nobu : That may be true, but how about pigs? Do you eat bacon?
Pat : Sure, I love bacon, but What have pigs got to do with whales?
Nobu : Well, I've heard that pigs are very intelligent and they're mammals too. Not only that, but pigs only
live for about six months on a farm before they are sent to be killed for their meat. Whales can live free
in the sea before they're caught.
Pat : I see your point, but I still feel very sad when I think of such a big, beautiful animal like whale being killed,
especially when there are so few of them.
Noby : To be honest, I've never thought about it that way. I just thought of whales as big, delicious fish. But now
I'll have to think about it more deeply.
Pat : I hope you do.
Nobu : By the way, do you think my new ivory cuff-links?
Pat : What!
Nobu : Just kidding, they're plastic.
