외국, 외국어 - 79

[다른 고장에 가면 그 고장 사람의 풍속을 따르라]는 옛 영국 속담이 있는데, 이 말은 외국에 가 있는 사람들에게는 대체로 좋은 충고가 된다. 이 충고에 따르려면 그 고장 사람들이 어떻게 하는가를 알 필요가 있다. 보다 중요한 것은 그들의 태도와 신념이 어떤 것인지를 아는 일이다.

• 알다 - know; ([~에 익숙해지다]의 뜻으로 보아) get acquainted with ~.

 

<구문 연구>

1. 첫 문장은 (a) [~라는 내용의 속담이 있는데... 좋은 충고가 된다]처럼 한 문장으로 묶어서 There is an old England proverb to the effect that ..... [meaning that ...] 해도 좋고, (b) 속담 그대로를 이용하여 An old English proverb says, "~" 또는 문장을 끓어서 "~." So goes an old English proverb. 따위로 한다.
2. 두 번째 문장과 세 번째 문장을 한 sentence로 묶어서 처리하는 것이 간편하다. [알다]를 know로 통일하여 두 목적어(what the Romans do 와 what their attitudes and beliefs are)를 관장하도록 해도 좋고, 뒤의 문장에 변화를 주어 get acquainted with 로 써보는 것도 좋다. [보다 중요한 것은] 부분은 삽입구로 해결해 버리는 편이 간결한 문장을 작성하는데 편리할 듯하다. 물론 마지막 부분을 따로 떼어 it is more inportant for you to get acquainted with ~ 처럼 처리할 수도 있다.
