외국, 외국어 - 78

외국에 가서 살면 너무 긴장하거나 불안을 느껴서 실패를 겪는 수가 흔히 있다. 반대로 좋은 결과를 초래하는 경우도 적지는 않다. 그러나 외국에 가서 살면 자기의 개인적인 결함이 그대로 넘어가고 행복하게 살 수 있으리라고 기대했다가는 틀림없이 실망하게 될 것이다.

 

<표현 연구>

• 외국에 가서 살면 - if you go abroad and live there, when you are living in a foreign country. ([외국에서의 생활]로 하여 명사형으로 고치면) life in foreign countries.
• 너무 긴장하거나 불안을 느끼다 - feel so much tension and anxiety (that ~). ([외국생활이 지나친 긴장과 불안을 주다]로 바꾸어 생각하면) gives you so much strain and worry (that ~).
• 실패를 겪다 - meet with failure, be frustrated.
• 반대로 - conversely, on the contrary, whereas.
• 좋은 결과를 초래하다 - bring (about) good results, prove successful, turn out to very fruitful.
• ~의 경우도 적지는 않다 - It is not unusual that ~ ; often ~; in many cases ~/
• 개인적인 결함 - personal defects.
• 그대로 넘어가다 - ([결함]을 주어로 하여 [관대히 보아 넘겨지다]의 뜻으로 보면) be overlooked; ([사람들]을 주어로 하여 [너그럽게 보아주다]로 생각하면) tolerate.
• 행복하게 살다 - enjoy a happy life. live happily. lead a happy life.
• 틀림없이 ~ 하다 - most probably; be almost bound to ~.

 

<구문 연구>

1. 첫 문장은 (a) it often happens that you will ~. 이나 (b) [외국생활](= Life in foreign countries)를 주어로 하여 gives you ~. 로 처리한다. [너무 긴장하거나 ~ 느껴서] - [과도한 긴장과 불안을 느껴서]로 하든가, [긴장이나 불안]을 주어로 삼아서 작성해 볼 수도 있다. 어느 경우나 so ~ that 구문을 이용한다.
2. 두 번재 문장은 원문에는 주어가 없지만 [외국생활(=your overseas life)을 만들어서 작성하도록 한다. 선행한 문장으로 알 수 있으므로 그냥 It로 받아도 된다.
3. 마지막 문장은 [~라고 기대했다가는] - [~라고 기대한다면]의 부분을 (a) if you expect that your personal defects will be ... and that you will be able to ~ 처럼 that-clause의 주어를 your personal defects로 잡고 다음 and that 이하는 you를 주어로 삼아서 해결하든가, (b) if you expect that in other countries peopel ... and let you enjoy ~ 처럼 [그곳 사람들](=people)로 세워서 타동사 구문으로 만들어도 된다.

• 선배들이 애써 너의 외로움을 달래주리라고 기대했다가는 곧 실망하게 될 것이다 - If you expect the older students(senior) to go out of their way to relieve your loneliness, you will be speedily disappointed(disenchanted).
• 하도 긴장이 되어서 잠시동안 말이 나오지 않았다 - I felt so much tension that for a moment or two I could not speak. I was so strained that I lost my tongue for a moment or two.

(1) When you are living in a foreign country, it often happens that you feel so much tension and anxiety that you meet with failure. Conversely, it is not unusual that oure over-seas life can bring good results. But if you expect taht your personal defects will be overlooked and that you will be able to enjoy a happy life abroad, you will most probably be disappointed.

(2) Life in foreign countries often gives you so much strain and worry that it does you little good. Although in many cases it can turn out to be very fruitful. But, if yor expect that in other countries people will be willing to tolerate your personal defects and let you enjoy a happy life, you are alomost bound to be disappointed.
