학교, 교육 - 65

대부분의 대학 졸업생이 입사시험을 치를 적에 이번 시험이 자기 생애에서 마지막이 될 것이라는 공통된 착각을 한다. 그러나 직장생활이 시작되면 그같은 생각은 그릇된 생각이었으며 자기가 치른 입사시험이야 말로 경쟁사회에 참여하는 첫 출발이었음을 곧 깨닫게 된다.

 

<표현 연구>

• 입사시험을 치르다 - go in for the examination(test) for service in a business company(one's employment examination). [입사시험] - a test(an examination) for service in a business company(firm). an entrance(employment) examination. [시험을 치르다] - take(sit for, enter, undergo) an examination, go(come) up for an examination.
• 이번 시험 - [지금 치르고 있는]의 뜻이므로 그냥 this 라고 하기보다는 the examination in question(at issue) 정도로 의역하는 것이 좋다.
• 자기 생애에서 마지막이다 - be the last examination(one) in their lifetime. ([생애에서 마지막 시험을 치다]로 생각하여) sit for the last examination of their lives.
• 공통된 착각을 하다 - be commonly confused into thinking that ~, be commonly misled by a thought that ~, have a common mistaken notion that ~, be under a common illusion that ~.
• 직장생활이 시작되면 - ([일단 ~이 시작되면]의 뜻으로 보아) once they begin their business(working) life, once in employmnet. ([~이 시작되면 곧]으로 보아) as soon as their buisness career begins.
• 그릇된 생각 - a mistaken notion 이지만 앞뒤의 문맥이 [그 같은 생각은 ~이다]로 되어 있으므로 그냥 they were mistaken 으로 하거나 they has a wrong notion about ~ 정도로 하면 된다.
• ~이야 말로 - the very ~, just ~, indeed 따위를 잘 이용하면 된다. 즉, the very examinatin they had taken... was ~, the employment examination they had just taken was indeed ~.
• 경쟁사회에 참여하는 첫 출발 - the first step(setout) into the competitie society, the start(starting point) of their initiation into the highly competitive world.
• 곧 깨닫게 되다 - soon come to realize, soon  come to discover(awake to the fact) that ~.

 

<구문 연구>

1. [대부분의 .... 착각을 한다]는 주어를 most college graduates 로 두고 술부를 다양하게 꾸며본다. [입사시험을 치를 적에]는 'when they take ~'로 해도 되지만 관계대명사 who를 써서 형용사절을 만들어 보는 것이 보다 간추려진다. 이것을 분사로 써서 'taking(sitting for)~' 따위로 처리하면 문장이 보다 간결해진다.
2. 둘 째번 문장은 [~이 시작되면] 부분을 once 나 as soon as 로 시작하는 부사절로 처리하고 전체의 주어를 they 로 한다. 동사를 come to realize(discover)로 하고 이것을 (a) [그같은 생각은 그릇된 생각이었다](thet had a mistaken notion about ~, ther were in the wrong)... (b) [자기가 치른 ... 첫출발이었다](the very examination ... was indeed their first step into ~)와 연결하면 된다.

Yet, as soon as their working lives begin, they soon come to realize that they had a mistaken notion about examinations, and that the one they had just taken was indeed their fisrt step into the world of competition.
