학교, 교육 - 64

[지식은 힘이다]라는 단순한 진리를 위대한 교육가들은 여러 세기 전부터 인지해 왔다. 학생이면 누구나 마음대로 쓸 수 있는 가장 큰 힘이 자기나름대로 선택을 할 수 잇는 힘이다. 학생들에게는 스스로의 운명을 좌우할 힘이 있으며 자기들이 선택한 운명에 도달하는 가장 좋은 방법은 교육의 힘을 빌리는 일인 것이다.

 

<표현 연구>

• 교육가 - (teacher 의 뜻을 강조하면) an educator, ([교육학자]의 뜻이 많이 가미되면) an educationist, an educationalist.
• 인지하다 - recognize, accept. ([진리로 여기다]로 생각하여) regard ~ as a truth.
• ~가 마음대로 쓸 수 있는 가장 큰 힘 - the greatest power that is at the disposal of ~, the greatest power that can be exercised(used) by ~, the greatest power that ~ can enjoy.
• 자기 마음대로 선택할 수 있는 힘 - the power of personal choice, one's power of making one's own choice, one's power to choose whatever one likes.
• 스스로의 운명을 좌우할 힘이 있다 - have the power to control one's own destiny. be possessed of the power to decide(determine, mold) one's own destiny, arrive at the destiny one has chosen, attain the goal of one's own choice.
• 교육의 힘을 빌리다 - [교육을 통해서]로 생각하면 선행한 [방법]이 주어이므로 is through the power of ~' 가 된다. 또는 students 를 주얼 ㅗ하여 'by the aid(with the help) of ~' 로 할 수도 있다.

 

<구문 연구>

1. 첫 문장은 (a) [위대한 교육가들](great educators)를 주어로 하고 술부를 'have recognized' 그리고 목적어를 [~라는 단순한 진리](the simple truth ~) 처럼 정리한다. (b) [흔히 ~라고들 하는데 교육가들은 이 단순한 진리를 ~]와 같이 조금 바꾸어 표현해보면 'There is a popular saying, "knowledge is power,' and this simple truth has been recognized by ~' 따위로 옮길 수 있다.
2. 두 번째 문장은 주어를 the great power, 술어는 [선택할 수 있는 힘](the power of personal choice)로 삼으면 가장 간단히 해결된다. 위에 나온 "Knowledge is power"라는 말을 바탕으로 전개하는 것이기에 [힘]은 모두 power 로 통일하는 것이 문백을 통하게 한다.
3. 마지막 문장은 'students have the power to ~' 와 'one of the best methods of ~ is ...'의 두 절을 and로 연결시킨다. 후반부는 주어를 선행한 students로 그냥 받아서 '(they) can reach their chosen destiny ..' 처럼 처리할 수도 있다. 또한 It is ~ that 의 강조구문을 이용하여 옮기는 법도 생각해 본다.
