1. Submarines, when above water, are run by Diesel engines and attain a very good speed. Under water they are driven by electric motors and can make only si to eight knots per hour. In addition to vertical rudders they also have horizontal rudders to aid them in diving or rising. When the commamder desires to make his submarine dip beneath the surface, he admits sea water into sealed compartments, so that the loaded ship is almost as heavy as the water displaced. The submarine can then be kept beneath the surface, while in motion, by th proper use of the horizontal rudders. To make the submarine rise, water is forced out of these compartments by compressed air. By the use of a periscope the pilot is able to scan the surface of the sea even though his boat is several feet below the surface.

3. When the first white men came to America, they found vast amounts of natural resources of tremedous value. Forests covered a large prat of the land. Later gas, oil, and minerals were found in unbelievable amounts. There was a great abundance of very fertile soil. Forests, prairies, sterams, and rivers abounded with wild life. So vast were the resources that it seemed that they could never b used up. So forests were destroyed to make way for farmland. Minerals and oil were used in great quantities to supply a young industrial nation. Almost every river became the scene of factories, mills, and power companies. Animals and birds were killed for food and sport.

Within a short time, the results were obvious. Floods caused millions of dollars' worth of damage yearly. The very fertile soil was washed away. Rivers were filled with dirt and wastes from factories and homes. Many of the rivers were made unfit for fish. Sieveral species of birds disappeared, and some animals seemed on the verge of disappearing. Future timber shortages were predicted. In short, Americans came to realize that some sort of preservation progran must be set, if future, as well as present, Americans were to share in the resources that are the heritage of the American nation.
