교통기관, 여행 - 45

두달 남짓 동안의 유럽여행을 마치고 며칠 전에 귀국했다. 도처에서 친구를 사귀어 그들을 통해 그 고장의 생활양식을 다소 이해할 수 있었던 것은 매우 다행스러운 일이었다. 혼자 여행하는 즐거움을 알게 된 것도 이번 여행에서 였다.

 

<표현 연구>

• 두달 남짓 동안의 유럽 여행  - a two month's trip in Europe, my European tour which lasted for over two months.
• ~을 마치고 - [마치고]에 구애되지 말고 [~에서 (돌아오다)]로 생각하면 전치사 from만으로 충분하다. 즉, (returned from (my European tor)'가 된다. 또는 after 를 써서 부사구를 꾸며 'after (a two months' trip in ~)'으로 해도 된다.
• 도처에서 - ([간 곳마다에서]의 뜻이므로) wherever I went, everywhere, (make friends) as I went
• 생활양식 - a way of life(living), the life led by ~, a mode(manner) of living, lifestyle.
• ~을 다소 이해하다 - understand something of ~, get some idea of ~, somewhat understand ...
• 혼자서 여행하는 즐거움 - the pleasure of travelling by oneself, the pleasure of solitary journey.

 

<구문 연구>

1. 첫 문장은 (a) 'I came home ... from ~' 형식으로 하거나, (b) 'After ~ I came back ...'로 처리한다.
2. 두 번째 문장은 [가는 곳마다에서 친구를 사귀였다(wherever I went, I made friends)와 [그들을 통해서 그 고장의 생활양식을 이해할 수 있었다](throught whom I was able to ...)의 두 문장을 연결 정리하여 [~것은 다행스러운 일이었다] 부분과 합쳐서 전체 문장을 마루리 짓도록 한다. 즉, 'I was fortunate(happy) that ~' 나 'It was a pleasangt experience that ~' 따위를 써도 되고, 또한 부정사를 이용하여 'I was fortunate enough to make friends ....'로 하든가 아니면 fortunately 라는 부사 하나로만 해결하는 방법도 가능하다.
3. 마지막 문장은 'It is ~ that ....' 의 강조구문을 써서 'it was during this trip that ...'처럼 하면 된다. 강조부분은 during this trip와 같이 부사구로 처리하는 것이 자연스럽다. 여행을 강조하려면 여행만 강조어구에 넣으면 된다. 'It was this trip that made me discover ...'

• [나는 그의 연설이 무엇을 뜻하는지 어느 정도 이해할 수 있었다] - I was able to get some idea of what his speech was driving at(meant).
• [우리나라의 산을 아름답게 하고 또한 장마철에 홍수를 막아주는 것은 산림이다] - It is the forests that make the Korean mountains look beautiful and protect the country from floods during the rainy season.

(1) I came back a few days ago after a two months' trip in Europe. Wherever  I went, I was foutuante enought to make friends through whom I was able to get some idea of the people's ways of living in that place. It was during this trip, too, that I discovered the pleasure of travelling alone.

(2) I came home a few days ago from my European tour which lasted for over two months. I was lucky that everywhere I made friends through whom I was able to understand something of lives led by the people there. It was also during this trip that I found (out) the pleasure of travelling by myself.
