교통기관, 여행 - 42

 

발동기를 단 비행기가 인간을 태우고 처음으로 이륙한 지도 벌써 100년이 된다. 기계의 발명이 다름아닌 인간의 마음 속에 잠재하고 있는 동경의 구현이라면 항해기 발달의 배경을 이루고 있는 것도 바로 인류가 지닌 '비행'에 대한 욕구인 것이다.

 

<표현 연구>

• 발동기를 단 비행기 - 직역을 하면 'an aeroplane equipped with a motor'가 된다. aeroplane은 당연히 engine이 달려있으므로 an aeroplane이라고 칭하기보다는 'a flying machine'이나 'a heavier-than-air machine' 정도가 적절할 것이다. [발동기]는 engine도 된다.
• 인간을 태우고 - with a human being aboard. [날으는 기계에 탄 인간]으로 생각하면 'a man abroad a heavier-than-air machine'이 됨.
• 이륙하다 - take (to) the air, take(hop) off, leave the ground.
• 기계의 발명 - the invention of machinery and tools.
• 다름 아닌 ~ 이다 - be nothing but ~, be no more than ~, be on other than ~, is basically ~.
• 인간의 마음 속에 잠재하고 있는 - latent in the mind, (the yearning) of the human spirit.
• 동경의 구현 - the materialization of the dream, the realization of yearning, concrete expression to the dreams, (the) manifestation of yearning in a concrete form.
• 항공기 발달의 배경을 이루는 것 - what makes the backgroung of the development of the air-craft, the background of the development of the air-craft.
• 인류가 지닌 비행에 대한 욕구 - the craving for aviation for mankind, the desire for human aviation(flight).

<구문 연구>

1. [70년이 넘는다]는 (a) more than 70 years를 주어, have elapsed since 를 술부로 하거나, (b) 'It was more than 70 years ago that ~ '의 구문을 이용한다.
2. [발동기를 단 비행기가 인간을 태우고 이륙하다] 부분은 [발동기는 단]을 [발동기를 이용하여]로 고쳐서 따로 떼어 놓으면 'an airplane with a human being abroad too (to) the air'처럼 된다. 또는 [발동기가 달린 비행기에 탄 인간이 ~] 식으로 고쳐서 'a man abroad a motor-driven heavier-than-air machine took to the air'로 나타낼 수도 있다.
3. [기계의 발명이 ...이라면, 항공기 ... 욕구인 것이다] 부분은 (a) It it is correct that ~, what makes .... is ~ 식으로 옮기거나 (b) If it is true, the background of ~ is basically ... 로 해도 된다. 이 문장을 둘로 나누어서 'Invention of ... is nothing but ~. If this is true ~ 처럼 표현해 볼 수 있다.

• <그것은 다름아닌 <삶의 의지>의 구체적인 표현인 것이다] - It is nothing but the manifestation of thet 'will to live' in a concrete form.
• [문학을 이해한다는 것은 바로 세상을 이해한다는 것이지 다른 아무 것도아니다] - An appreciation of literature is no other than an appreciation of the world and it means nothing else.
