취미, 운동 - 32

 

여름이 되면 자연은 우리를 유혹한다. 바닷가와 산간의 휴양지는 잠시나마 도시생활의 권태에서 벗어나고 싶어하는 사람들의 마음을 돋군다. 사람들은 서로 휴가계획이 있느냐고 묻는다. 공무원이나 회사원들은 이때가 되면 특별휴가를 얻게 되고 그 밖의 시민들은 각자의 호주머니 사정에 허락하는 한도내에서 휴가여행 계획을 짠다.

 

<표현연구>

• 유혹하다 - lure, allure. Nature가 주어이므로 into her bosom을 덧붙여 옮겨볼 수 있다. 또는 'be tempting to ~'를 이용해도 된다. 이밖에 그냥 beckon to(손짓하여 부르다)를 써서 직선적으로 번역해도 좋다. Ex. [도시의 유혹] the allurements(temptations) of a big city, [바다의 유혹] the lure (call) of the sea.
• 산간의 휴양지 - mountain resorts. Ex. a health resort, a holiday resort, a mountain (seaside) resort, a summer(winter) resort.
• 도시생활의 헌소에서 벗어나다 - get away from the din and bustle of a large city. [도시생활의 헌소(喧騷)]는 관용적 표현으로 'the routine din of city life(도시생활의 일상적 소음)'이 있다.
• ~의 마음을 돋군다 - tempt를 써너 나타내면 되는데 [마음을 돋구어서 ~시키다]라는 부분이 없으므로 그냥 형용사 tempting을 이용하여 'be tempting to ~'를 쓰면 된다. entice, seduce, allure 따위를 써도 된다.
• 휴가계획 - vacation plans[schedules]; plans for the [summer, winter] vacation.
• 공무원이나 회사원들 - public officials and business employees; [공무원]은 이밖에 a public servant, a public service worker 따위의 표현이 있다. 영국영어로는 a civil servant, a government employee, 미국에서는 an office holder, a department clerk를 쓰기도 한다. 회사원은 a company employee, an office worker, an office man, a white-collar worker로 쓴다.
• 특별휴가를 얻다 - be given a special leave (of absence), be granted a special leave of absence. 능동태로 표현하면 obtain(secure, get) a leave of absence. [유급 휴가]라는 뜻을 살리려면 'be granted a paid leave(holiday)'를 쓰면 된다.
• ~의 호주머니 사정이 허용하는 한도내에서 - according to one's own financial means, within one's own means, as far aa one's finances allow.

<구문 연구>

1. 첫 문장은 Nature를 주어로 하고 us 또는 people을 목적어로 삼는다.
2. 둘째 번 문장 [바닷가와 ...마음을 돋군다] 부분은 (a) the beaches, mountain resorts를 주어로 하든가 (b) [...에서 벗어나고 싶어하는 사람들]을 주어로 삼아 are attracted by ~, feel themselves drawn toward(to)~ 따위의 술부를 꾸며서 처리할 수 있다. [... 하는 사람들]은 'those who ~'
3. 세 번째 문장은 whether 구문을 이용하여 '~ ask each other whether ...'로 해결한다.
4. 마지막 문장은 and로 연결하는 단일 문장으로 해도 되고 나누어 두 문장으로 만들어도 된다. [이 때가 되면]은 되도록 간단한 구로 처리하여 'at this time of (the) year, every year about this time'쯤으로 처리하는 것이 좋다.

• [달빛에 매혹되어 뜰로 나갔다] - The moonlight was so tempting that I went into the garden, The moonlight seduced me out into the garden.
• [그는 시끄러운 도시행활에서 벗어나 산속에 있는 은거처로 갔다] - He retired to his hermitage in the mountains away from the din and bustle of city life.

(1) Nature beckons to people in summer. The beaches and mountain resorts are tempting to those who want to get away briefly from the routine din of city life. People ask each other whether they have any vacation plans. Public officials and business employees are given special leave for vacations at this time of year. Other citizens are planning, within their own mena, to travel to resorts.

(2) In summer, nature never fails to beckon to us invitingly. Those who are eager to get away from the din and bustle of a large city feel themselves drawn toward seaside and mountain resorts. We often hear that people ask each other whether they have any vacation plans. Every year about this time, govenrment and business emplyees are granted a special paid leave for vacation, and other citizens are busy planning their vacations to their own financial means.
