1. A general feature of modern societies is the gap that separates adults from the young, and it is most painfully felt between parents and children. From the paraents' point of view it may be less painful to accept the unwanted behavior of one's children when it can be seen as part of a vast movement by a whole generation rather than as a personel reproach and content to particular parents. Those with rebellious children can sympathize with each other about the rotten state of the world, society and the younger generation, ㉠without necessarily feeling that they have failed in the rasing their children. ㉡If this leads to fewer parents acting hysterically at the first signs of independence from their children and to fewer parents giving up all attempt to communicate with them, it might be somewhat easier for the children to grow up morally. If parents are calmer and more intelligent in dealing with their teenage children, the latter will not need to spend so much effort and energy inf fighting unnecessary battles with their parents. Hence they haave the opportunity to concentrate more on tackling the problems of growing up rationally.

2. Poverty in these areas is not new but the determination to overcome it is. This determination, largely a product of contact with the West, is the real driving force beind all attempts at "getting started" in these countries. Unfortunately, however, these attempts face very serious obstacles. Despite the advantage of a readymade industrial technology which can be "borrowed" from the economically advanced countries, the modern underdeveloped country often has to cope with much more difficult problems than did its nineteenth-century predecessors. For one thing, the availabel technology, with its heavy demand on capital and trained personnel, is by no means ideally suited to conditions in developed countries, where these items are scarce and untrained labor is abundant. For another, these countires lack the social and economic preparation of their predecessors and thus must attempt to accomplish not one but several revolutions at the same time. To make matter worse, the modern underdeveloped country-particularlly in Asia-faces extremely acute population problems. A "public-health revolution" has made rapid rates of population increase common throughout the underdeveloped world, and many of these countries are already densely populated in relation to their resources. And finally, the poor climate for private foreign investment maans that the gap to be filled by foreign govenmental assistance in these countries is a very substantial one.

3. In childhood we form our general attitude towards life. ①It is in childhood that we form impressions of life, for example, that life is easy, that people are hostile, that it pays to be good, that nothing pleasant ever lasts. We later undergo many new experiences and adopt many new ideas, but the general attitude we adopt towards life in childhood gives the tone to all our after-life. Our childhood atmosphere determines whether our later attitude to the world be pessimistic, confident, or self-assertive. In such cases, we carry into adult life an attitude towards the world which was perhaps natural and inevitable in the circumstances of childhood, but quite out of keeping with our later environment. So ②a man who has learnt to be antagonistic in childhood maintains this attitude even in an atmosphere of kindliness, and remains suspicious among the best of friends: his character is distorted.
