2019. 5. 24. 07:27고등학교 영어 공부방/독해 문제 - 1

1. "Hello, Silly Bill!" said Johnnie Watson, halting beside William Sylvanus Baxter. "What's the news?"

①The nickname "Silly Bill" was not to his taste, especially in public, where he preferred to be addressed simpy and manfully as "Baxter." Any direct expression of resentment, howerer, was difficult, ②since it was plain that Johnnie Watson intended no offensewhatever and but spoke out of custom.

"Don't know any." William replied coldly.

"Dull times. isn't it?" said Watson, ⓐa little depressed by his friend's manner. "I heard May Parcher was coming back to town yesterday, though."

"Well, let her!" returned Milliam, still severe.

"They said she was going to bring a girl to visit her." Jonnie began ⓑin a confidential tone. "They said she was an excellent beauty and -"

Well, what if she is?" the discouraging Baxter interrupted. "Makes little diffenrence to me, I guess!"

ⓒ"Oh no, it doesn't. You don't take any interest in girls! Oh no!"

"No, I do not!"was the emphatic and heartless retort. ⓒ"I never saw one in my life I'd care whether she lived or died!"

"Honest?" asked Johnnie. "Honest, is that so?"

"Yes, 'honest'!" William repled, sharply. "They could all die, I wouldn't notice!"

Johnnie profoundedly impressed. "Why, I didn't know you felt that way about them, Silly Bill."

"Well, I do feel that way about them!" said William, outraged by the repetition of the offensive nickname.

2. When someone shouts at you, "Look (   ㉠   )!" and you jump just in time to avoid (   ㉡   ) hit by an automobile, you owe your escape (   ㉢   ) injury to the fundamental cooperative act by which most of the higher animals survive, namely, communication by (   ㉣   ) of noises. You did not see the car coming; nevertheless, someone did, and he made certain noises to communicate his alarm to you. In (   ㉤   ) words, although your nervous system did not record the danger, you were unharmed because another nervous system did. You had the ①advantage of someone else's nervous system in addition to your own.

Indeed, most of the time when we are listening to the noises peope make, ②we are drawing upon the experiences of others in order to make up for what ourselves have missed. Obviously the more an individual can make use of the nervous system of others to supplement his own, the easire it is for him to survive. And, of course, the more individuals there are in a group cooperating by making helpful noises at each other, the better it is for all. Birds and animals congregate with their own kind and make noises when they find food or become alarmed. In fact, gregariousness as an aid t osurvival and self-defense is forced upon animals as well as upon men by the necessity of uniting nervous system even more than by the necessity of uniting physical strength. Societies, both animal and human, might almost be regarded as huge cooperative nervous system.
