2. The antarctic Continent is a frozen land of rock and ice with almost no life. This continent of over five million square miles is three-fourths as big as Canada and the United States together. And it is more hostile to man than any other place on earth. At the South Pole the temparature may drop as low as 120 degrees below zero Fahrenheit. Before the year 1957, as far as any mam knows, no human being had ever lived there throught the long winter night. In December of 1956 there was a great happening at the South Pole. A tiny village of six small houses ws riging from the snow. For many monthes ot come, thsoe six houses would be the home of eighteen scientists and Navy men from the U.S.
