  once again, I was astonished by what Dupin knew. "How could you possibly know," I asked, "that the man was a sailor, and that he belonged to a Maltese ship?"

  "I do not know it," said Dupin. "I am not sure of it. But I found this small piece of ribbon on the ground at the bottom of the lightning -rod. Look."

  He gave me the ribbon to look at. It was a dark-red colour, and old and dirty.

  "Sailor always use ribbons like these," Dupin said, "to tie back their long hair. And this colour is a favourite of Maltese sailors. You see, if I am right about this, it will make the man think carefully."

 

약간 애매한 부분이 있고, 한글로 옮기기가 쉽지 않을 것 같군요. 그런 데서 실력이 나오겠죠? 그런데 너무 고민하지 말고, 무난하게 처리한다는 생각으로 번역하세요. 그게 요령이랍니다. 영국 영어를 보면 <colour, metre, theatre, favourite>처럼 <our, or tre>와 같은 표현이 있는데, 프랑스 어휘의 영향을 받아 그렇게 적습니다. 발음하고 좀 동떨어졌죠. 그래서 미국의 웹스터 사전이 사전을 만들면서 현실적인 발음으로 고쳐 미국식 영어는 <or, ter>이 되었답니다, 발음과 철자를 통일시킨 것이죠. 여러분, 상식 하나 늘었죠? ㅎㅎㅎ
