<2004 한국외대 수시2 외대프런티어II 논술고사> ※ 다음에 주어진 영어 제시문을 읽고 아래 세 개의 문항에 대하여 각각 답하시오.   (한글로 기술함) 1. 제시문 A와 B에 일관되게 나타난 두 가지 상반된 견해를 요약, 정리하시오. (30%) 2. 제시문 A 또는 B를 토대로 제시문 C가 진보와 보수 중 어느 쪽의 견해인지 구체적으로 논술하시오. (30%) 3. 제시문 C의 견해에 대해서 본인의 입장을 밝히시오. (40%) <제시문 A> Liberals see many social programs as functioning to promote fairness. According to them, certain people and groups of people are disadvantaged. For social causes such as poverty and race, which are not faults of their own, such people have been prevented from being able to compete fairly in pursuit of their self-interest. Racism, sexism, poverty, and the lack of education are seen as barriers to the free pursuits of self-interest and self-development by disadvantaged individuals and groups. To conservatives, on the other hand, social programs amount to spoiling people. Instead of having to learn to fend for themselves, people can depend on the public support. This makes them morally weak, removing the need for self-discipline and will-power. Thus, conservatives see social programs as immoral. In addition, in the conservative view, social programs militate against morality of reward and punishment. According to conservatives, it is human nature to be motivated by rewards and deterred by punishments. If people were not rewarded for being self-disciplined and punished for being slothful, there would be no morality and self- discipline, and thus society would break down. <제시문 B> Liberals see violent crime as a result of social causes such as poverty or peer pressure. They tend to use the concept of social causes, in providing explanations of crime and justifying policy. They argue that the fundamental problem is in the society, not in the people. Therefore, the long-term cure for violent crime, liberals argue, is to eliminate poverty by the provision of job training and jobs, and to develop prevention programs. Conservatives do not believe in social causes of crime. According to them, violent crime in later life is caused by a lack of strict discipline in childhood, a lack of painful corporal punishment in response of misconduct. Therefore, any appeal to social causes is just an excuse of lack of self-discipline. Given the central moral principle of conservatives, namely, the morality of reward and punishment, it is no surprise that punishment is preferred as a form of justice. They assume that if crime is punished harshly enough, it will end. <제시문 C> A government that lets many of its citizens go hungry, homeless, uneducated, or sick while the majority of its citizens have more, often much more, than these basic needs met is an immoral, irresponsible government. And citizens who are not willing to support such governmental obligations are immoral, irresponsible citizens. ※ 유의사항 1) 시험시간은 120분, 분량은 1200자 내외(±100자)로 할 것. 2) 문항번호 1, 2, 3을 답안지에 표기 할 것. 3) 원고지에 제목이나 이름, 기타 자신을 드러내는 표기를 하지 말 것. 4) 원고지 사용법과 어문 규정을 지킬 것. 5) 답안은 반드시 흑색 또는 청색 펜으로 작성할 것. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- <2004학년도 수시 2학기 외대 프론티어II 전형 (논술) 출제의도 >  2004학년도 수시 2학기 한국외국어대학교의 논술 문제는 최근 우리 사회의 화두로 등장한 진보와 보수의 대립 구조를 되새겨 볼 수 있는 유형이다. 사회 현안에 대해 양분된 시각을 이론적으로 조망할 수 있도록 사회복지, 범죄 그리고 정부의 역할에 대한 예를 지문으로 제시하였다.    본 논술에서 측정하고자 하는 것은 영어 제시문에 대한 이해 능력뿐만 아니라 수험생의 사고 능력이다. 특히 사고력 측정을 위하여 복지나 범죄 문제에 대한 두 진영의 논리를 바탕으로 정부의 참된 역할이 무엇인지에 대하여 수험생 자신의 견해를 재구성하여 논술하도록 하였다. 지문을 바탕으로 두 진영 중 어느 쪽 입장을 선호하든지 수험생들의 논리적 추론 능력 파악에 중점을 두었다.
