산업, 경제 - 101

사원들을 고능율로 일하게 한다는 것은 임금을 적게 주고 과중한 노동을 시킨다는 뜻이 아니라 주어진 작업시간에 종업원의 능력을 최고도로 활용하여 기업의 성적을 올린다는 것이다.

 

<표현 연구>

• 사원 - emplyees 가 일반적인 말.
• 고능율로 일하게 하다 -  make employees work with efficiency; make employees achieve high efficiency, expect(demand) high effficiency from workers 따위가 직역이 되겠지만 오히려 뜻을 살려 demand high production from employees 나 make employee achieve high production rate가 적역일 듯하다.
• 임금을 적게 주다 - make (them) work at low(er) wages; enforce low wages upon (them). ([저임금]은 low wages, [저임금 노동] cheap labor 이다.)
• 과중노동을 시키다 - enforce(impose) overwork upon (them); overwork (them); demand excessive work from (them). [과중한 노동]은 overwork; excessive work 이고, heavy work 는 [일]의 성질을 가리켜 말하는 것이며 사람에 따라 heavy work라도 overwork 가 안 되는 경우가 있을 수 있다. 환자라면 light work 라도 overwork 가 될 수 있는 것이다.
• ~라는 뜻이 아니다 - (I를 주어로 하여) do not mean that ~; ([~일하게 하는 것]을 subject로 놓으면) is not ~ ing.
• 주어진 작업 시간에 - during the given working hours 가 직역이지만 given 은 이 경우 필요하지 않다. during their working hours 로 충분하다. 그냥 while at work 로 해도 좋다.
• 고강도로 활용하라 - make the best use of; utilize fully 따위는 [이용하다]의 뜻이므로 이 context에서는 [사원들로 하여금 그들의 능력을 최고도로 발휘하게 하다]의 뜻으로 생각항 help them (to) display their capacities to a full extent; enable them to give full play to their abilities; let their capacities have full scope; encourage them to demonstrate their abilities to the full 따위로 한다.
• 기업의 성적을 올리다 - ([기업]은 undertaking; enterprise 이지만 여기서는 [회사의 성적을 올리다]로 보아서) do (a) good business; get satisfactory results in business; carry on a prosperous business.

 

<구문 연구>

1. 전반부 [사원들을 ... 뜻이 아니다]까지를 끊어서 한 문장으로 만들어 본다. (a) I do not mean을 main part로 삼으면 By demanding high production from .... I do not mean that we should force .. and upon them. (b) 원문 형식을 그대로 살려 Making employees achieve high production rate does not mean that we should impose ...
2. 후반부는 Instead 나 Rather 로 앞 문장과 연결해 (a) I mean to let them give full play to ..., then to do a successful business ~. (b) 종업원들의 능력을 최고도로 발휘하게 함으로써 기업의 성적을 올린다는 것을 뜻한다]로 순서를 바꾸어 생각하면 it means getting satisfactory results ... by encouraging them to ... during working hours 처럼 옮겨 볼 수도 있다.
