과학, 기술 - 93

고대 이집트의 피라미드를 세우는데 수백 만 명의 인간을 노예처럼 부려먹었다고 한다. 오늘날에는 노예 대신 기계가 사용되고 약간의 힘만 드리면 용이하게 거대한 힘을 낼 수가 있다. 생각해보면 기계만큼 신기한 것도 없다. 말하자면 기계는 인간이 이룩해 낸 기적인 것이다.

 

<표현 연구>

• 고대 이집트의 피라미드 - pyramids in ancient Egypt.
• ~를 세우는데 - in order to build; for constructing; for the construction of ~.
• 수백 만 명의 인간을 부려먹다 - millions of men are employed; millions of men are put to (slave) labor ~; are used (like a slave); ~ are slaved.
• ~ 대신에 - in place of 를 써도 되지만 [~에 의해 대치되었다] 식으로 표현을 하면 be replaced by ~ 를 이용하여 slaves are replaced by machinery 처럼 옮길 수도 있다.
• 약간의 힘을 들이면 - by using a little force.
• 거대한 힘을 내다 - produce(put forth) tremendous energy. 여기서 [힘]은 [기계의 출력]이므로 energy 가 적합하다.
• 생각해보면 - if one comes to think of ~; ([이런 견지에서 볼 때]의 뜻으로 생각하여) viewed in this light; come to think of it.
• 신기하다 - marvelous; original; novel 따위의 말이 있으나 여기에서는 wonderful 이 가장 적절하다.
• 말하자면 - so to speak(say); as one might put it.
• 인간이 이룩해 놓은 기적 - a miracle worked by man; a wonder worked by man; a miraculous device contrived by man.

 

<구문 연구>

1. 첫 문장은 It is said(They say) that ~ 에 이어서 종속절의 주어를 [수백 만 명의 인간](= millions of men)으로 하고 수동태로 문장을 꾸며본다.
2. 두 번째 sentence는 (a) slaves를 주어로 하고 passive voice 로 slaves are replaced by machinery and it is easy to produce ... 로 하든가, (b) machinery 를 주어로 세욱 active voice로 꾸며서 machiery take the place of ..., and we can get ... 처럼 처리한다.
3. 세 번째 sentence는 (a) nothing ~ more ... than 의 구문을 써서 you will find that nothing is more wonderful than ... 으로 하든가 (b) [인간이 만들어 낸 가장 신기한 발명품]으로 고쳐서 You cannot help thinking that a machine is the most wonderful ... that man has ever ... 처럼 옮겨보는 방법도 있다.

In the present age slaves are replaced by machinery and it is easy to pruduce tremendous energy by using a little force. If you come to think of it, you will find that nothing is more wonderful than a machine. It is, so to speak, a miracle worked by man.

Nowadays machinery takes the place of them, and we can get tremendous energy by adding a little force. viewed in this light, we cannot help thinking that a machine is the most wonderful invention man has ever devised. It is, as we might put it, a miraculous device contrived by man.
