인간, 인간관계 - 83

이 세상에는 인간만큼 흥미로운 것은 없다고 하는 편이 적절한 표현처럼 내게는 생각된다. 풍경같은 것은 아무래도 좋다. 아무리 훌륭한 명승지라하더라도 그곳에 인간이라는 동물을 배치하지 않으면 내 기억에는 남아나지 않는다.

 

<표현 연구>

• 인간 - a human being.
• ~편이 적절한 표현이다 - It may be more proper to say that ~. 그냥 I should say (that) ~ 처럼 표현해도 어느 정도 이 느낌이 전달된다.
• 풍경 같은 것 - (앞뒤 문맥으로 보아 [풍경 그 자체]의 뜻으로 보아) landscape ifself; natural scenery.
• 아무래도 좋다 - ([나는 ~에는 상관치 않는다, ~에는 관심이 없다]의 뜻으로 보아) as for ~ I am little concerned; I don't care for ~; ~ have(has) no attraction for me.
• 아무리 훌륭한 명승지라고 해도 - however famous a place may be for its beautiful scenery; ([어떤 훌륭한 명승지]처럼 명사로 만들어 주어로 삼으면) any place of scenic beauty.
• 인간이라는 동물을 배치하지 않으면 - 어렵게 직역하려는 대신 [그 풍경이 인간과 결합하지 않으면] 따위로 보아서 unless it is combined with human beings 처럼 처리하든가, 보다 간단하게 without man as an element 등으로 옮겨 볼 수도 있다.
• 기억에 남아있다 - remain in one's memory; be retained in one's memory; be impressed on one's memory(mind).

 

<구문 연구>

1. 첫 문장은 I should say 나 It may be more proper to say 로 시작하여 that-clause로 연결해도 되지만 오히려 간단히 For me 또는 I think that 로 시작하는 편이 낫겠다. 주부분은 (a) 최상급을 써서 man is the most interesting creature ... 로 하든가, (b) nothing is so ... as ~ 또는 there is nothing more ... thant ~ 의 형식을 쓴다.
2. 두 번째 문장은 (a) as for landscape itself, I ~ 로 하든가, (b) 부사구 없이 그대로 I don't care for natural scenery 처럼 처리해 버릴 수도 있다.
3. 마지막 sentence는 (a) 원문의 pattern를 그대로 살려 However famous a place may be for ..., it will never ... unless ~ 처럼 unless를 이용하든가, (b) [사람이 없는 풍경은 내 기억에 남아나지 않는다]로 고쳐서 주어를 Any place of scenic beauty(without man as an element) 로 삼으면 보다 간결하게 해결된다.

• 나는 명성 따위는 아무래도 좋다 - I don't care for fame. Fame has no attrattion for me.
• 복장 따위는 아무래도 좋다 - I don't care how I dress.
• 그런 것은 아무래도 좋지 않느냐? - What does it matter? What of that? Let that go. Let it be.
• 그가 거절하든 않든 아무래도 좋다 - It matters little whether he refuses or not. Bother(Never mind about) his refusal!
• 그의 이름은 내 기억에서 사라지지 않을 것이다 - His name will never fade out of(from) my memory. His name will never go(pass) out of my mind.

 

번역

(1) For me, nothing in this world is no interesting as human beings. I don't care foe natural scenery. No matter how famous a place may be for its beautiful scenery, it will never remain in my memory unless it is combined with human beings.

(2) I think that man is the most interesting creature in the world. As for landscape itself I have little interest. Any place of scenic beauty without man as an element, will not remain in my memory.
