학교, 교육 - 67

교육부에서 공표한 대학졸업제도가 시행되면 학사학위를 취득하기 위한 필요요건이 한층 더 까다로워질 것이다. 졸업 예정자는 필요학점을 취득하는 외에 종합시험에 합격하고 논문이 통과되어야 한다. 누구나 입학만 하면 자동적으로 졸업이 보장되던 시절은 이제 갔다.

 

<표현 연구>

• 공표하다 - make public, release, issue.
• 새로운 대학입시제도 - a new college graduation system.
• 시행되다 - be enforced, be put in force, be put into operation, come into force, become operative(effective), take(go into) effect.
• 학사학위를 취득하기 위한 필요조건 - the requirements for a bachelor's degree. the requirements that lead to an A.B. degree. [학위를 따다] take(obtain, receive) a degree.
• 까다롭다 - ([엄격하다]로 생각하여) be rigorous(strict, tight).
• 졸업예정자 - a graducate-to-be. ([졸업후보자]의 뜻이므로) candidate.
• 필요학점을 취득하다 - obtain(take) all the required credits.
• ~하는 외에 - in additin of ~ ing.
• 종합시험에 합격하다 - pass a comprehensive examination, succeed(be successful) in a comprehensive test.
• 논문이 통과되다 - get one's thesis approved (by professors). ([논문이 기준에 도달해야 된다]로 생각하면) measure up to the standard deserving the degree.
• 입학만 하면 - ([일단 입학되면]) once he admitted to college, once he is registered(enrolled) at a college.
• 자동으로 졸업이 보장되다 - be assured of an automatic graduation. ([아무런 노력없이 졸업하다]로 바꾸어 생각하면) can graduate (from a college) without any serious efforts(works).
• ~의 시절은 이제 갔다 - gone are the days when ~. [전에 ~하던 일은 이제 옛이야기다]라고 바꾸어 생각하면) an old story, a past issue, a thing of the past 따위를 이용해 볼 수 있다. 또는 가장 쉽게 처리하여 ~is no longer treu 로 해도 된다.

 

<구문 연구>

1. 첫 문장은 (a) 주어를 [학사학위를 취득하기 위한 필수요건](the requirements for ~)로 하여 will become more rigorous로 연결한다. [~가 시행되면] 부분은 'with the enforcement of ~'와 같은 부사구로 정리한다. (b) 두 문장으로 나눠서 [교육부에서는 곧 시행할 예정으로 새로운 ~을 공표했다][이 제도에 의하면 학사학위의 취득이 한층 엄격해질 것이다]로 옮겨보는 것도 한 방법이다.
2. 두 번째 문장은 (a) the candidate(s) 를 주어로 is required to ~ 를 술부로 삼는다. 여기에 'to pass a comprehensive test' 와 'get his thesis approved' 의 두 부분을 연결시키거나 (b) 후반부의 주어를 their theses 로 다시 내세워 별도의 문장을 만들어 볼 수도 있다. [~외에]는 in additio to 가 이끄는 부사절로 정리하여 문미에 붙인다.
3. 마지막 문장은 Gone are the days when ~ 처럼 관계부사를 쓰는 것이 가장 첩경이지만 [전에는 ~ 들 했는데 그것은 이제 옛날 이야기다]와 같이 표현을 바꾸어 써보는 것도 좋다.

• 모든 학생들이 일학년 영어과목을 이수해야 된다 - All students are required to take the freshman English course.

(1)The requriements for a bachelor's degree will become more rigorous with the enforcement of a new college graduation system which was made public by the Ministry of Education. The candidate will be required to pass a comprehensive examination and get his thesis approved by professors in addition to obtaining all the required credits. Gone are the days when every  college student was assured of an automatic graduation once he was admitted to college.

(2) The Ministry of Education has released a new college graduation system which is expected to become effective soon. According to this system, the requirements that lead to an A.B. degree will become more rigorous. The candidates are required to pass an comprehensive test and their thesis should measure up to the standard deserving the degree in additon to taking all the required credits. In former days, every college student could easily obtain a diploma without any serious efforts once he was registered at a college, but now that is no longer true.
