학교, 교육 - 63

졸업생 여러분은 이와 같은 모교의 역사와 전통에 긍지를 느끼고 여러분이 배운 전문적인 학문 기술 및 그 바탕이 되는 학문적 정신을 몸에 지니고 사회에 나가 여러분 자신의 인생을 올바르게 살아가면서 동시에 한국 국민의 참다운 독립과 세계평화을 위해 힘써 주기를 바라는 바입니다.

 

<표현 연구>

• 졸업생 여러분 -  (연설에서 대중을 앞에 두고 하는 말이므로 you 를 넣어서) You new graduates, you, who are now leaving our University.
• 모교 - one's Alma Mater(이것은 라틴어의 nourishing mother, bounteous mother 의 뜻에서 온 것으로 소문자 alma mater 처럼 쓰기도 한다) one's school(college, university)
• 긍지를 느끼다 - ([자랑으로 알다]의 뜻이므로) be proud of, take pride in, have a pride in, pride oneself on. take 의 경우에는 a 가 안 붙었지만, have 를 쓸 때는 a 가 붙는다는 점에 주의를 해야한다. Ex. take cold, have a cold/ take great pride, take false pride. 단 형용사가 있을 경우에는 take a noble pride in, take a little pride 처럼 관사가 붙을 때도 있으므로 역시 주의가 필요하다.
• 여러분이 배운 전문적인 학문기술 - the expert knowledge and technical skill(know-how) (which) you have so far acquired(majored in). [....을 전공하다]는 specialize in 이지만 미국에서는 major in 을 흔히 쓴다.
• 그 바탕이 되는 - which lies at the foundation(basis) of them all, the basic(fundamental) spirit of (the truth-seeker).
• 학문적 정신 - 좀 옮기기가 까다롭다. sportsmanship 처럼 scholarship 를 써 봄직도 하지만 이 단어는 [학식, 장학금]의 뜻이므로 'the scholarly mind(spirit)]' 정도가 무난할 듯하다. 뜻으로 의역하면 'the truth -seeking spirit' 나 'the truth-loving spirit, the spirit of the truth-seeker' 따위도 좋다.
• ~을 몸에 지니고 - armed (equipped) with ~, with `. 좀 의역을 하면 eager to use ~ 처럼 해 볼 수도 있다. 훨씬 자연스럽다.
• 사회에 나가다 - go out into the world, get in the world, start life, begin life, make a start in life.
• 인생을 올바르게 살아가다 - pursue an honest career, tread the path of virtue. [여러분 자신의 ~]로 되어 있으니 'tread the path of virtue each in your own lfie'가 될 터인데 좀더 분해하여 '(you will) each live your own life righteously and honorably'로 하면 더욱 구체적이다.
• 한국국민의 참다운 독립을 위하여 - in the cause of real independence of our (country and) people. cf. in the cause 대신 for the purpose of 도 쓸 수 있다. Ex. for the cause of democracy (peace and good will among nation). in the interest(s) of (international peace) 처럼 interest 를 쓸 수 도 있다.
• 세계평화 - the peace of the world, world peace(이 땐 the 가 필요없다).
• 힘쓰다 - strive (hard), endeavor, exert oneself. devote oneself to (the cause of ~).

 

<구문 연구>

1. 상당히 긴 문장이다. 분석해보면 주격을 you new graduates(new graduates는 반드시 필요한 것은 아니지만 듣는 사람이 학부형이 아님을 구별할 때만 한 번 쓰고 다음부턴 you 만으로 충분하다)로 놓고 그 다음이 (a) [긍지를 느끼고] = take pride in ... (b) [사회에 나가] -make a fresh start in life <여기에 붙는 수식절이 [를 몸에 지니고]가 된다>. (c) [여러분 자신의 인생을 올바르게 살아가면서] live your own life ... (d) [...을 위해 힘써주기를...] work hard for the cause of ... 가 된다. 너무 길므로 (a), (b)를 하나로 묶어 you new graduates 에 연결시켜 독립 문장으로 끓고, (c), (d)를 다시 주격 you 에 연결시켜 다른 문장으로 정리하면 좋겠다.
2. 동사 처리에 있어서는 명령문은 지나치게 강압적이고 또한 'you are called upon to ...' 도 같은 느낌을 준다. 'you are requested to ...' 는 너무 약화된 느낌이다. 따라서 결국 'I hope you will ...' 정도가 적합하다.
3. [이와 같은 ... ] 으로 알 수 있듯이 앞서 한 말과 연결이 지어질 수 있도록 'In such a history and tradition of ...' 처럼 옮기는 것이 좋다.

You should each live your own life righteously and honorably, and strive hard in the cause of real independence of our country and people and also of the peace of the world.

(2) I hope you new graduates will pride yourselves on the brilliant history and tradition of your Alma Mater, and will go out into the world eager to use the expert knowledge and technical knowhow you have so far mastered, as well as maintaining truth-loving spirit. As you each pursue an honorable career of your own, I hope you will also devote yourself to the real independence of our country and peopel and to the peace of the world as well.
