학교, 교육 - 62

교육의 가장 중요한 요소는 이해이다. 상대방이 잘 알았다고 하지 않는다면 정말로 가르친 것이 못 된다. 따라서 어떤 의미로는 진정한 교육의 바탕을 이루는 것은 민주주의의 개념이라고 할 수 있겠다.

 

<표현 연구>

• 중요한 요소 - an essectial element, an important factor, essential things. ([이해]를 주어로 삼으면) be essential to ~, be the (first) requisite for ~.
• 상대방 - the other party. ([상대방]이란 결국 [학생]을 말하는 것이므로) the students, one's pupils.
• 정말로 가르친 것이 못 된다 - ([정말로 가르쳤다고 말할 수 없다]의 뜻으로 보아) you(we) cannot say (that) you have truly taught him(them). ([가르침]이 완전하지 못하다]로 의역하면) teaching is not complete, your teaching is not complete.
• 어떤 의미로는 - in a (certain) sense. in a way, in one (some) sense.
• ~의 바탕을 이루는 것은 ... 이다 - what underlies true education is ... ([`은 ...을 바탕으로 하고 있다]로 생각하면) ~ is based upon ...., is founded upon... Ex. 의술의 바탕을 이루는 여러 과학 - the sciences that underlie the healing art.
• 민주주의의 개념 -글자 그대로는 the idea of democracy, an idea of democracy, democratic ideas, democratic principles 따위지만 좀 고쳐서 the democratic process, concepts of democratic processes 따위로 하는 것이 영어로 무리가 없는 뜻이 된다.
• ~라고 할 수가 있겠다 - It may be said that ~. we may insist that ~.

 

<구문 연구>

1. [교육의 ... 이해이다]는 (a) 주어를 the most essentical element in education, the most important part of education, one of the most essential things in education 으로 하면 술부를 'is understanding' 으로 처리한다. 좀더 보충하여 [가르침을 받는 편의 이해]로 생각하면 'is understanding on the part of its recipient' 처럼 옮겨도 된다. (b) [이해
2. [이해]를 주어로 놓아 술부를 'is most essential to ~', 나 'is the first requisite for ~' 처럼 처리하는 방법도 있다.
3. [상대방이 ... 못 된다] 부분은 (a) 우리말 구성을 그대로 살려 'unless the other party says he ..., you cannot say (that) you ~' 처럼 옮겨도 되지만, (b) [학생을 충분히 이해시키지 못하면, 당신의 가르침은 완전하지 못하다]로 고쳐 생각하면 'if you cannot give ... a full understanding, your teaching is not complete' 로 처리해도 뜻에는 큰 차이가 없다. 또한 (c) [학생을 완전히 이해시키야  비로소 가르침이 완전한 것이다] 식의 표현으로 고쳐 접속사 till 를 이용하여 not ~ till 구문으로 꾸며보면 'Teaching is not complete till you have ....' 식이 된다.
4. [진정한 교육의 ... 할 수가 있겠다] 의 마지막 문장은 'we may say(insist) that...' 이나 'it may be said that ...' 으로 시작하여 (a) [진정한 교육은 ~에 바탕을 두고 있다] 로 하여 'is based(founded) upon ...' 으로 처리하거나 (b) [의 바탕에는 ...가 있다]로 보아 'at the basis of ~ there exists ...' 따위의 표현도 가능하다.

(1) One of the most important things in education is understanding on the part of its recipient. Unless the other party says he has understood thoroughly, you cannot say you have truly taught him. It may therefore be said that true education is, in a sense, founded upon the democratic process.

(2) The most essential element in education is understanding. Teaching is not complete till you have made students understand thoroughly. So, it may be said that, in a sense, true education is based on upon concepts of democratic processes.
