학교, 교육 61

이 대학교가 설립된 지 이제 70년이 된다. 처음에는 학생수도 적고 아주 작은 학교였지만 지금은 7개 단과대학이 있고 수천 명의 학생들이 공부를 하고 있다.

 

<표현 연구>

• 대학교 - [종합대학교]는 a university, [단과대학]은 a college 이다. 미국에서는 종합대학교 내의 단과대학이나 학부(faculty, department)나 대학원을 school이라고도 한다. Ex. a medical[law] school - 의과(법과) 대학. a graduate school - 대학원.
• 설립되다 - be founded(established), be set up.
• 처음에는 - at first, at the start(onset). 이와 같은 부사구를 쓰지 않고 [처음에는]의 뜻을 나타낼 수 있는 방법도 있다. Ex. [그는 처음에는 신문기자였다] - He began his life as a newsman. [처음에는 회원이 다섯 명뿐이었다] - We had only five memvers to start with. [그 회사는 처음에는 소규모의 것이었다] - The company began in a small way.
• 학생수 - the number of students, an enrollment of ~. [~가 많다(적다)]는 'be many(few)' 나 'be larg(small) in number'로 흔히 나타내지만 [학교]를 주어로 삼으면 'have many(few) ~' 로 충분하다. 또는 [학생수가 ~가 된다]의 경우 number 를 동사로 써서 'The students number ~' 로도 처리가 가능하다.

 

<구문 연구?

1. 분해하면 (a) [~은 설립된 지 70년이 된다], (b) [처음에는 작은 학교였다], (c) [지금은 거기에서 수 천 명의 학생들이 공부하고 있다]의 세 문장이 된다.
2. [된 지 70년이 된다]는 (a) 'It ~ since ...' 구문을 써서 'It is ~ since ... was founded' 나 '~ is have passed since ...' 로 하든가, (b) [~은 이제 70세가 된다]는 식으로 생각하여 '~ is seventy years old' 로 처리해도 된다. 또는 (c) 현재완료형을 써서 '~ has been in existence for ...' 와 같은 표현을 살려볼 수도 있다.
3. [처음에는 ... 작은 학교였다]는 (a) [처음에는]을 원문의 형식대로 부사구로 살려 'At first it was ... with ~' 처럼 하든가, (b) [적은 학생수를 가진 작은 학교로 시작하였다] 식으로 고쳐서 'it began as .... with ~' 로 한다. 또는 (c) 'it was ... and had ~ to start with' 따위의 표현도 생각해 볼 수 있다.
4. 마지막 부분은 (a) it (= this university) 를 주어로 하여 'it has seven ..., where thousands of students ~', 처럼 [단과대]를 선행사로 삼아 관계부사의 계속용법을 이용한다. (b) there are 를 문두에 내세우고 뒷 부분은 With construction 으로 처리하면 'there are ... with thousands of students ~ ing' 과 같은 구문이 된다.

• 서울에 와서 살게 된 지가 벌써 5년이 되지만 아직도 심하게 앓아본 적은 없다 - Although it is already five years since I came up to Seoul to live, I have never taken seriously ill.
• 이 마을에 살게 된 지 5년이 된다 - Five years have passed since I settled in this town.
• 그 회사는 설립된 지 30년이 된다 - The company has been in existence for thirty years.
• 이 학교는 학생수가 800명의 대학이다 - This is a university with a students enrollment of 800.
• 이 대학에는 9개 학부에서 3천 명의 학생이 공부하고 있다 - There are nine faculties with three thousand students studying in this university.
