도서, 독서 - 54

우리가 위대한 작가의 작품을 읽을 때는 보물을 찾고 있는 격이라고 생각해야 한다. 이 보물을 차근차근 머리 속에 잘만 간직해두면 평생을 살아가는 동안 여러 경우에 도움이 되는 것이다.

 

<표현 연구>

• 위대한 작가의 작품을 읽다 - read a work of a great author, be employed(engaged) in reading a great and good author. Ex. [피카소의 작품] - a (work of) Picasso.
• 보물을 찾다 - search after treasures, engage in a treasure-hunting, hunt after highly-prized articles, be in research of sumless treasures.
• ~ 격이다 - ([~와 비슷하다, ~에 비유할 수 있다]의 뜻으로 보아) be like ~ ing, may be linkened to ~, be compared to ~.
• 차근차근 - in orderly fashion, systematically, carefully, well and regularly.
• 머리 속에 간직해 두다 - lay up in the mind, make a mental note of, engrave on one's memory, keep - in one's mind systematically, store up in the mind.
• 평생을 살아가는 동안 - in our lives, through life, as long as one lives. for a life-time.
• 여러 경우에 - on various occasions, under various circumstances.
• 도움이 되다 -  be of use to ~, be useful(serviceable) to ~, come in useful(handy, serviceable), be helpful in ~.

 

<구문 연구>

1. [우리가 생각해야 한다]는 (a) [~ 때는] 부분은 부사절로 꾸며 'when we read(are employed in reading]...'처럼 만들고 본문의 주어 역시 we 로 세워서 [~ 해야 한다](ought to consider ourselves as .... ing ~)를 술부로 하거나, (b) 주어를 [위대한 작가의 작품을 읽는 일](reading a great and good author)로 놓고 술부를 [~에 비유할 수 있다](is like ~ ing, may be compared to ~)로 처리할 수 있다.
2. 둘째 번 문장은 조건절로 if they are well and regularly laid up in the mind'로 꾸미고 main clause 를 'they will of use to us ...'로 옮겨서 별도의 문장으으로 꾸며 처리할 수도 있지만, 관계대명사 which 를 써서 앞의 문장과 연결 볼 수도 있다. 즉, treasures 를 선행사로 하는 adjective clause 를 구성하는 것이다.

(2) We ought to consider that reading a great and good author is like searching aftr highly-prized articles. If we discover and store them up in our minds, we shall find them useful on various occasions throughout our lives.
