교통기관, 여행 - 43

 

달리 더 좋은 호텔도 찾을 수 없었고 이런 저런 일로 시간을 빼앗기고 있는 사이에 런던에서의 2주간 체류기간은 끝나버리고 만 셈이었지만, 2, 3일이 지나자 이 호텔의 분위기가 차차 거슬리지 않게 되었고 일주일째가 되자 마치 내 집에 있는 것 같은 착각을 느끼게 되었다.

• 달리 더 좋은 호텔을 찾을 수 없었다 - 만약 I could not find a more comfortable hoetl이라고 하면 [현재 묵고 있는 호텔이 가장 좋다]는 최상급 뜻이 된다. 따라서 could not find a more comfortavle hotel to accomodate me처럼 말을 보충할 필요가 있다. 이밖에도 failed to find a better accomodation, could not take a room at a more comfortable hetel than this 따위로 옮길 수 있다.
• 이런 저런 일로 시간을 빼앗기다 - my days were taken up with attending to many things, my time was taken up with this and that, I had my hands full doing this and that.
• ~에서의 이주간의 체류기간 - my two weeks in ~, my (brief) sojourn of two weeks in ~.
• ~은 끝나버리고 말았다 - ([체류기간]을 주어로) ~ came to an end, (I를 주어로) found myself at the end of~.
• 2, 3일이 지나자 - ([2, 3일 후에는]의 뜻으로 보아) after my first few days, ([2, 3일의 체류]를 주어로 하면) my first few days (produced)
• 이 호텔의 분위기 - the atmosphere of the hotel.
• 차차 거슬리지 않게 되었다 - ([차차 덜 거슬리게 되었]로 보아) grew less and less jarring on my nerves. ([거슬리지 않게 되었다]를 그대로 옮기면) ceased to disturb me.
• 일주일 째가 되자 - A week went by and ~, about the end of the first week.
• 마치 내 집에 있는 것 같은 착각을 느꼈다 - had the illusion of being in my home. was under the illusion that I was staying at home, ([착각]이란 말을 쓰지 않고) was feeling as if I were staying at home.

<구문 연구>

1. [달리 ... 없었다]까지를 우선 한 문장으로 끊어서 (a) Having failed to find ..., I had no choice but to put up at .... (b) I could not take a room at a more ... than this. 따위로 옮긴다.
2. [이런 저런 일로 ... 끝나버렸다]까지를 한 sentence로 묶어서, (a) And while my time ..., I found myself at the end of ... (b) And my brief sojourn of .... came to an end while I had my hands full doing ... 처럼 꾸며본다.
3. 2, 3일이 지나자 ... 않게 되었다]까지를 다시 끊어서 세번 째 sentence로 정리하면 다음과 같다. (a) After my first days, however, the stmosphere of ... grow less and less... (b) 이것을 다시 두 부분으로 나누어 But my first few days at .... produced a subtle change in my feelings. The atmosphere ceased to ... 처럼 의역하여 보아도 좋을 듯하다.
4. [일주일 째가 되자 ... 느끼게 되었다]를 마지막 문장으로 만들면 (a) A week went by and now I was having the illusion of staying ... (b) about the end of the first week, I was feeling as if I were ... 처럼 된다. 이와 같은 원문은 한 문장을 여러 문장으로 나누어 번역하는 연습을 하기에 적합하다.
