취미, 운동 - 40

 

어떤 주택지역의 천 세대를 대상으로 하여 한가한 시간을 어떻게 이용하는가에 대해 조사를 실시했다. 이에 따르면, 여가에 취미를 즐기는 사람들은 소수에 지나지 않고 대개는 스마트폰이나 텔레비전을 보면서 그럭저럭 시간을 보내고 있는 것 같다.

• 주택지역 - a residential quarter(district, area).
• 천 세대 - one thousand households.
• ~을 대상으로 하여 - [대상으로 하여]라는 어구에 구애될 필요없이 'of 1,000 households in ~, this enquiry given to 1,000 households'로 문맥에 따라 적절한 전치사 하나로 처리한다. 전치사는 동사의 성질을 포함하고 있다는 점도 익혀두어야 한다.
• 한가한 시간을 이용하다 - make use of one's free time, spend one's leisure hours.
• ~에 대해 조사를 실시하다 - A poll has been taken in about ~, (carry) a survey of(about) ~ on ...
• 이에 따르면 - the result (of survey) showed that ~, it was found that ~, according to the survey.
• 여가에 취미를 즐기다 - devote it(their free time) to their hobby, enjoy their hobbies in their leisure hours.
• ~은 소수에 지나지 않는다 - only a small part(percentage) of them ~, only a handful of people(persons) ~.
• ~하면서 그럭저럭 시간을 보내다 - waste the time ~ ing, spend their time listening to ~, while away the time ~ ing.

<구문 연구>

1. 첫 문장을 우리말대로 단일문장으로 처리하면 [~을 대상으로 하여, ~에 대하여]가 종속절이 되고 [조사를 실시했다]가 주절이 된다. 조사를 한 주체가 불확실하므로 수동태를 이용하여 'a poll has been taken in about ~ on...'처럼 한다. [~을 대상으로 하여]는 문두에 내세워 'Of 1,000 households ...'로 시작해도 좋다. about 다음은 'how they mad use of ~'처럼 명사절로 만든다.
2. 전체 문장을 하나로 묶어보는 연습을 해본다. 즉, [여가 시간을 어떻게 보냅니까?]를 직접화법으로 하여 "How do you spend ~" was an enquiry given to, It was found that ~ 처럼 하면 된다.
3. 후반부에서는 while 이나 whereas 를 이용하여 문장을 연결한다.
4. 'spend one's time ~ ing'라는 자주 쓰이는 구문을 이용한다.
