1. In various ways schools are esparated from the rest of the life of the community, and therefore there is the ever-present danger that education may become artificial and remote from the real things of everyday life. When the purpose of a school is merely book-knowledge, the separation between school and life need not matter so much. In certain conditions ⒜a form of education which little to do with the business of life could endure for centuries, as it did in China, where public officials were required to pass a test in archery long after firearms had become the established means of warfare. Today, however, when the school undertakes the responsibilit of preparing students for the life outside its wall, the seaparation of the school from life, and the unreality of the subjects studied, are matters of grave concern. ⓑIt becomes necessary to bring the world into the school and the school into the world.            <고려대, 76년>

4. Our efficiency in loving our lives as oridnary human beings depends on what we do with lots of information: What we ignore in it, what guidance to immediate action we accept from it, how we store it and how we use the store. Crossing the road safely obviously involves selcetion: we disregard available information about, say, shop-window dispalys and pay attention ot traffic. But there is more to it than this: we make guesses about the future from things we notice in the present.

(A)Our decision when to cross the road, though made apparently in a flash, depends on estimates based on past experience of similar situations; about, for instance, the speed of a car, the skill of a cyclist, the temper of a taxi driver, our own quickness, the state of the road surface and the behavior of other pedestrians; and is perhaps also influenced by an article on road accidents we have recently read. (B) If we have made a good guess we shall have pedicted correctly where we shall be in relation to the approaching traffic during all the time taken to make the crossing and we shall get safely over the road.
